Wadee,

My 45 year old sister, who has never had a baby wants to come to Thailand for IVF (in-vitro fertalization) sessions. If sucessful, she will not fly back to America because she will worry about the fragility of the fetus, etc. She would prefer to have the baby in Thailand and then return home after the baby is at least 6 months old.

What kind of visa would she need to stay for 1 year with the option of yearly extensions after.

Attending a university is a secondary option she is open to if there are no other options.

She has alot of money (if that helps somehow related to visa options).

Thanks in advance

kdc1899,

This can be a sensitive subject. Please do not take offense. I just want to point out a few facts or questions to ask the care-giver. I was almost at this point with my first wife a few years ago.

First off, I am not a doctor. Perhaps a medical professional will also respond if my numbers are not correct.

If it were my sister, I would do some research on her behalf for piece of mind. The success rate for that age group could be as low as 10-15%. What did your sister's doctor say about success/complications of the procedure? Was she refused this procedure in the U.S.? While the costs involved are less in Thailand, there are clinics in the U.S. which will refund the cost if the procedure is not successful. Has she had this procedure performed before? Was your sister told here success rate will be higher in Thailand? I would also worry about my sister's mental state if the procedure is not successful, as there could be a fair amount of anguish involved. Will some other close family/friend be staying with your sister? The primary concern should be a uneventful pregnancy and a healthy baby, not a visa.

Again, no offense intended. I wish your sister a successful outcome.

2.25 In the case of medical treatment or convalescence or to look after a patient:

Permission will be granted for a period of not more than 90 days at a time.

(1) Confirmation and request has been made by a physician responsible for the treatment. The Physician must describe the details of treatment and advised that the illness is a barrier for travelling.

(2) In the case of looking after a patient, confirmation and request has been made by the physician responsible for the treatment or by an embassy or consulate.

(3) Patient Carer, except parents, spouse, children, adopted children or children of spouse, shall be granted no more than 1 extra person.

If sucessful, she will not fly back to America because she will worry about the fragility of the fetus, etc.

Many pregnant women travel in an early stages of pregnancy. Given her age, the doctor can recommend against traveling. (I don't know.) In addition, airlines prohibit women from traveling at a certain stage of pregnancy. Best wishes to your sister.

While you are doing research about the medical aspects a call to the US Embassy is in order to insure that the child will be registered by the Embassy to insure it's US citizenship

After it reopens due to a slight disagreement in Bangkok.

thanks all.

it sounds like she knows the odds and wants the lower costs so she can try this until it is no longer possible.

is there such thing as a medical visa?

I've heard that the hospitals (Bangkok Hospital or Samittivej etc.) can organize to get visa for their patients but I'm not entirely sure.

Off topic and inflammatory posts have been deleted. OP is not asking your opinion but has come to the Visas forum for visa advice. Lets keep it to that please. Any further attempts to derail this topic in this manner will result in a formal warning.
