Very Simple Question...

Nit noi means a little or a little bit. You need to provide the context in which you want to use 'only small' as I can think of few ways to say this depending on the situation.

Agreed. In most situations, you need to use a classifier for the thing you are talking about. So what is it you want to be small.

I am thinking about pinning a message in this forum, something like this:

To make it easier for people to answer your questions, please always provide as much context as you can. The most common answer for all language queries is "it depends on the context".

This is because genuine matches between two unrelated languages are very rare.

I just want a little (sugar, of the drink somebody is about to pour you).

เอาสัก /นิดหน่อย / นิดเดียว/ เท่านั้น ao sag /nit noi/nit diao/ thaonan

OR

ไม่ต้องเยอะก็ได้ mai tong yer' gor dai

You don't have to give/pour/whatever verb/ so much.

-----

I want the small one (choosing between two sizes of something)

เอาอันเล็ก ao an lek

'an' is a classifier, there are hundreds of them, you can do a search and check out other threads. Which classifier to use depends on the noun it relates to, but 'an' is an option if you dont know which is the proper classifier to use.

-----

There are more situations possible than this, so a full sentence would help.

Sorry, yes, more context. It's actually at the gym. Every day i go and they give me a big and a small towel and I only ever want the small one :o So I'd just like to be able to say "only small" ("just small", "small only" or whatever the appropriate response would be). Reading responses, "เอาอันเล็ก ao an lek" seems close to the desired response?

While I'm here, could anyone type the thai characters that would equate as closel as possible to "His Words"? I have a Thai k/b so can reproduce them. There is no context to this, it is simple the name of my website.

many thanks everyone

neph.

เอาอันเล็กอย่างเดียว ao[M] an[M] lek[H] yaang[L] diao[M]

..should cover it, and if you want to be polite, add ครับ khrap[H] at the end.

In actual fact, the correct classifier for this word is ผืน pheun[R] but since most people have a problem getting the vowel sound right, go with 'an' instead.

You can also say

mai tawng-gaan pheun/an yai khrap (I dont need the big one)

I have always gone with the "ao lek" if I want the smaller version and nid-noi to give a quantity Like phom ao nam-keng nid-noi krup, if I only want a small amount on nam-keng (ice) in my drink.

Of course the opposite Yai for large and muk-muk for alot.

Works for me.

A simple Thai expression for this could be "au peun lek gor por krub"

That's very good too. Now the OP can vary himself as well. :o
