Hey all, I'm new here and needed to get to know some facts.

This year I turned 15 and live in BKK all my life, therefore my name is in the Tabien Bahn. I wanted to do military service to get out of the call up when I'm 20/21. I went down to their place this afternoon for some tests to try to get in.

I was 1 out of the 8 in my group that didn't make it. They told me that it was because "I failed to do 22 push ups" but I managed to pass the 800m run and the 34 sit ups, while another guy in my group who FAILED both the sit ups and push up tests but passed the running test managed to get in. I have no idea why I was rejected and he got accepted! :)

They said they would put me on this waiting list until the 14th of June when they will announce my final result. It's a long time to be pressured by the fact that I didn't get in straight away like the other 7.

One of my friends who made it through said that his dad has some connections with the army and he might be able to help me out.

If they announced that I will be "rejected" on the 14th, I don't want to go through the process of doing it again next year for 3 more years because I'm moving out of the country for university in 3 years anyway, so if I do it next year I wouldn't be able to finish the course in time before I leave. :D

But the questions are...after all this, and if I chose NOT to do military service in Thailand (being a dual nationalist and all), would they call me up for constriction when I'm 20/21 years old and living in another country in the next 3 years? If I chose to follow my dad's nationality (British) instead of my mum's (Thai), would I still NEED to be called up? Is there a way out of this? Please help! I'm getting worried being constricted will get in the way of my life. :D

are you talking about doing cadets? There is a lot of demand to get in some cadet corps due to the fact that people want to avoid miliarty serivce. As such, some people pay money under the table to get in.

i guess you've come across a cadet training school which does this if they are clearly taking failed applicants.

In your case you sound like you are prepared some miliarty duty, just not the full two years if you got conscripted. In this case, you have some good options.

1) Being at university, you can get a waiver from service until you graduate. The Thai embassy in the country you will be studying in can organise the paperwork.

2) When you return to Thailand, as a university graduate, you have the option of volunteering on conscription day and doing 6 months of duty. Many hi-so families go down this route as some see military service as a good thing to do. Remember however, that if you don't volunteer and are called up, you'll have to do the full two years.

Your other option at the moment is to see if your school can organise cadets for you. Sounds like you are at an international school.

Note 5 of your British P/P....dual nationality does not exclude you from national service.

Believe if you can dodge it until you are 30 they will not bother you..

if you can stay out of the country till you are 30....

if you are in thailand, then you have to report.

Samran, if a Thai national goes to live abroad for a prolonged period (several years), can he get his name removed from the house registration book and as a result will not be called up for the lottery draw for military service?

I think that is how it works.

If you are on the tabieen baan however, the conscription rules say something along the lines of:

- between 18 and 30 years of age you can sent a proxy to attend conscription day, if you have reason that you cannot attend yourself. It doesn't give details of acceptable circumstances for not being able to attend, but I've always assumed being out of the country is one of them.

- after 30, you must attend conscription day yourself (though at which point you'll be rejected as being unsuitable for service).

yeah, it's st. john's international school.

so youre saying that i would still have to do a full 6 months later after going for 3 years of cadets at this age?

no, if you have done the 3 years on cadets then you'll be exempt from conscription.
