If e-gate eligibility is really expanded to cover a substantial percentage of arrivals, it seems very unlikely that this sort of gatekeeping will continue - the higher ups will want the expansion to be seen as a success. From the article attached to the OP (emphasis added): "Officials estimate the expansion will make Auto Gates accessible to an additional 6.5 million short-term visitors annually, alongside approximately 900,000 long-term visa holders." I have never seen a system like this in any country.
