DavidHouston Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Friends, I am having difficulty understanding the syntax of the following sentence: "กลุ่มคนเสื้อแดงหลังจากถูกกองกำลังติดอาวุธฝ่ายรัฐบาลเข้า "กระชับวงล้อม" จนมีผู้ตกเป็นเหยื่อสังหารล้มตายและบาดเจ็บจำนวนมาก" In the first clause, กลุ่มคนเสื้อแดงหลังจากถูกกองกำลังติดอาวุธฝ่ายรัฐบาล เข้า "กระชับวงล้อม", I can't seem to find the primary verb for the apparent subject-noun "กลุ่มคนเสื้อแดง". The sentence seems to read: The Red Shirts / after they were ___ by the government's armed forces / came in and tightened the encirclement / until many people fell victim to murder and assault. However, this was clearly not the intent of the writer. Let's try: "The government armed forces tightened the noose of [the protesters] to such an extent that many people were killed or injured." If that interpretation is correct, please help me understand how this meaning arises from the syntax of the original sentence. Likely, however, I am merely misunderstanding the meaning of the entire sentence. Thanks for your help.
mikenyork Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 David: I get this: "After the red shirts were increasingly tightly encircled by the militarily-armed government forces to the point that many people became victims of assassination and were killed and wounded, " but then I need a follow-on sentence or phrase to say what the red shirts did as a result of this encirclement. If this is the end of the matter, then I am (at least) as confused as you are. Hope this may help some, although I am doubtful that it really will.
