Dear all,

First of all, this topic has nothing to do with the application for a marriage visa.

I'm a 26 y.o. frenchman. I've worked in Thailand from June 2006 till July 2009. I'm now in Thailand under a non-immigrant type O visa valid till December 2010 and I'm panning to marry my girlfriend this year.

I've received a list of documents I need to present to my embassy in order to create a certificate of legal capacity to marry.

And I was surprised to see that among all the documents required, I also had to show documents mentioning my employment and the monthly income related to it. That's a problem for me since I have no job at the moment (we rely on my gf's salary, my savings and subsequently on my family's financial help).

However it's indicated that while those employment and income-related documents are not required on the french side, Thai authorities will ask for them.

After contacting my embassy, I was told that the embassy can issue the certificate of legal capacity to marry even though I declare being unemployed but I will have to explain my employment situation to the thai authorities...

According to some french people I spoke to in another forum, the monthly income is written on the certificate of legal capacity to marry once established by the embassy.

I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to be able to marry my girlfriend...

Anybody knows about this ?

Thank in advance !

Suspect it will be up to the District Office - the paperwork is expected to show you are of good standing and able to support the marriage. But the registration can take place at any District Office in the country so expect if one failed another might not.

You should not need to prove income to marry. I have never heard of this before. I have received much advise on this forum as to what I need paper wise to marry and income has never been part of the subject. Allow some more seniors members to give their opinion.

I'm in a similar situation than the OP, except I have income but not fixed, so embassy staff said she couldn't certify any monthly income.

At end of interview, she recommended me to get married at the Thai district of the French embassy, as they were more "easy"... I'm still waiting for the certificate from French embassy, so I still didn't see by myself how "easy" they are... :)

And then I asked "The Corner", which is the shop to translate French <=> Thai & also has packages to take care of all marriage paperwork, and it seemed like the guy there never heard of any income requirement on the Thai side...

The embassy certificate to marry ie with previous divorce papers etc should not take more than a day or two then the translation in Thai then to be stamped by the MFA ministry of foreign affairs here in Thailand. Legal services can provide you with a marriage within 4 days. Whats the rush, I bet you are still eyeing other women. Oh I forget it is against the law to bet in Thailand

Where are you applying to register your marriage? It's been three years since I married my Thai wife. Since we had to go to Bangkok to to get the translation stamp from the MFA ministry of foreign affairs we decided to register our marriage at the BangRak District in Bangkok. No BS, no proof of income requirement, no tea money, just paid the fee and received the Certificate in a nice blue folder. Friendly service. I've heard that other Districts tend to find something wrong with your paper work and then the problem disappears after some Tea money has changed hands.
