Police Raise Anti-gambling Awareness in School

BANGKOK: -- The metropolitan police have held a school seminar to raise awareness against football gambling, its consequences and legal punishment while many students have admitted that their peers have been betting on World Cup matches.

In fear that Thai youths may fall prey to the World Cup gambling fever, Metropolitan Police Division 6 officers traveled to Suankularb Wittayalai School and held a seminar to raise awareness on the temptation of easy money and the road to gambling addiction.

The officers also informed the students of the criminal punishment of one-year imprisonment and a 1,000-baht fine for illegal gambling.

The school's director and officials were in full support of police's anti-gambling effort. Parents were notified to be on a lookout for any irregularities in the students' spending and whether the students are following every match or only their favorite teams.

Suankularb Wittayalai School Director Pira Chaisiri said the school has been vigilant against any gambling by assigning teachers to keep watch on students' behavior.

If any students are caught betting on football matches, their parents will be contacted to find a solution to the problem.

However, students felt that the police effort may not be as effective since the choice to gamble is up to individuals but the seminar may raise awareness and help those who are considering gambling on the football matches.

They also admitted that there are peers who have placed bets on the matches but most students are strictly sports fans and only watch the matches of their favorite teams.

Foreign Ministry: No Evidence of Fugitive Red-shirt Leaders Hiding in Cambodia

The Foreign Ministry has refused to confirm whether some fugitive red-shirt leaders are hiding in Cambodia. Meanwhile, other red-shirt leaders have been transported to Bangkok prisons after being denied bail Yesterday.

Assistant to the Foreign Minister, Panich Wikitset has commented on a report from the security authority that Arisman Pongruengrong and Suporn Attawong, fugitive red-shirt leaders, are hiding at a luxury casino hotel in Poipet, Cambodia.

Panich said the minister has not received any confirmation on the report, but if it were true, it would mean that both have crossed the border illegally.

Panich added that the ministry has been working with immigration police to prevent the fugitives from leaving the country.

Robert Amsterdam, a legal adviser to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has questioned the legality of the government's recent appointment of a fact-finding commission on the political unrest chaired by Khanit Na Nakhon.

Panich said the ministry does not need to respond to Mr. Amsterdam, claiming the lawyer is a professional lobbyist.

Meanwhile at Bang Kwang Central Prison, many people have been waiting since early morning to visit the red-shirt leaders who are being held there.

According to the prison's visiting regulations, visitors can only meet the prisoners once a day, with maximum of 10 visitors at a time for 20 minutes.

Among the red-shirt leaders who are being held there are Veera Musikapong and Natthawut Saikuer. Other leaders are being held at Klong Prem Remand Prison.

Police warn motorists against using BRT lane

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Metropolitan Police has reminded motorists not to use the special lane reserved for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), warning that they will be subject to a fine if fail to cooperate.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief Police Major General Panu Kerdlarppol emphasized that commuters must not take advantage of the BRT lane as the action was a violation of the traffic law and the operation of the rapid transit buses would be obstructed. He said those who failed to comply would be subject to a fine of 400-1,000 THB, adding that more than 50 vehicles had been pulled over and fined for running in the lane.

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) officially kicked off its three-month trial run on 29 May 2010, starting from Chong Nonsi to Ratchaphruek. The BRT will start providing full commercial service from 2 January 2011 onwards.
