Oil Prices Blamed For Slow Border Trade

Oil prices blamed for slow border trade

SA KAEO: -- Traders at the Rongklua market on the Thai-Cambodian border blame rising oil prices for the significant fall in business.

Trade at the market has dropped dramatically because rising oil prices have increased transport costs and forced up the prices of goods, the president of the Sa Kaeo Provincial Chamber of Commerce, Bamrung Lorcharoenwatanachai told TNA on Thursday.

Now only a couple of thousand traders and visitors a day turn up, compared to more than 10,000 when the market was in full swing.

There has been a 10 million baht a day fall in trade, said Mr. Bamrung.

A Cambodian trader, Mrs Yo Vien at Rongklua market, said she used to earn between 5,000 and 20,000 a day. But recently she was lucky to make a thousand baht.

The other traders are all facing the same trouble. Many told TNA that if the situation does not pick up soon, they will have to close their stalls.
