Security tightened at cremation site of key Red Shirt military strategist

BANGKOK (TNA) -- Nearly one thousand police officers will be deployed Tuesday at a Buddhist temple in the capital to provide security at the royally-sponsored cremation of key Red Shirt military strategist Army Specialist Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol.

Police Bureau Division 1 Commander Pol Maj-Gen Wichai Sangprapai, supervising security for the event, said intelligence reports indicate that any disturbance is believed to be unlikely as the event is to mourn for Gen Khattiya, better known as ‘Seh Daeng.’

Gen Wichai said the Metropolitan Police Bureau will deploy four companies of riot police, about 600 men in total, as well as 200 other personnel including plainclothes police, a strong rapid deployment force, a policewoman team and bomb disposal units to prevent any possible disturbance in the compound and surrounds of the temple.

Around 10,000 persons are expected to attend the rites this Tuesday, Pol Maj-Gen Wichai said, asking them to park their vehicles at the Royal Plaza and the Royal Turf Club to avoid traffic congestion.

Seh Daeng, a staunch supporter of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was shot in the right temple on the evening of May 13 while he was being interviewed by foreign media outside the Red Shirt barricades at Saladaeng intersection. He was later pronounced dead at 9.20am on May 17 at Vajira Hospital.

The general was a hardliner among the leading protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) who were demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve the House unconditionally and also supervised the movement’s security operation and Red Shirt guards. (TNA)

Pheu Thai MP says too risky to field Natthawut in by-election

Pheu Thai party-list MP Phiraphan Phalusuk said it will be too risky to field Natthawut Saikua, a red-shirt leader, in the Bangkok by-election next month.

Phiraphan said Natthawut is not a resident of Bangkok so he will need his education background to make himself qualified to run in the by-election.

Phiraphan said the election laws state that a non-resident candidate must have continually studied in the constituency for at least five years.

But Natthawut studied for a bachelor degree at a university for four years before studying for a master degree in another university.

Phiraphan said he is not certain whether studying at two universities could be counted as five consecutive years of study or not.

"I don't want the party to take risk regarding this. If Natthawut applies and is disqualified later, our party will lose a chance to contest the by-election," Phiraphan said.

Pheu Thai registrar insists Natthawut qualified to run

Kamol Bandaiphet, the Pheu Thai Party registrar, insisted Monday that Natthawut Saikua is qualified to contest the Bangkok by-election next month.

Kamol said Natthawut has studied in Bangkok for at least five years so he is qualified to contest the election in Bangkok. Kamol said Nathawut studied for a bachelor degree for four years and master degree for two years.

Kamol said if the party decides to filed Natthawut in the by-election, it will depend on the Criminal Court as to whether to approve the request for Natthawut to be released on bail or not.

Natthawut is now being detained at the Bangkok Remand Prison on terrorism charges.

Kamol said if the court decides against granting bail to Natthawut, the court will have to explain why he can't be released to contest a democratic election.

Palme d´Or winning Thai film rated 15+

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Palme d'Or award winning Thai film Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat (Uncle Boonmee who can Recall his Past Lives), directed by Mr Apichatpong Weerasethakul, has recently been rated 15+ or suitable for those aged more than 15 years old.

The Thai Censorship Board granted the 15+ rating as proposed by the film itself. No scene in Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat was censored unlike in the previous internationally recognized film of the director in 2006, Saeng Satawat (Syndromes and a Century).

The premiere of the film on Friday night at SFX Emporium was reported to be very lively with the participation of people in the independent film industry. Mr Apichart noted that his film might not narrate stories similar to others, but he would like his audience to be open-minded about his work.

Many sides commented that the Ministry of Culture decided on the film rating very quickly due to the film's global recognition at the Cannes Film Festival. Mr Apichart disagreed, but later admitted that the Palme d'Or award might have helped speed up the process.

Thailand is the third country to have this film shown on screen following France and Australia. The film will be shown in SFX Emporium from 25 June onwards. The film will be shown once a day at 19.00 hrs during weekdays. An additional round at 14.00 hrs will be offered during weekends.
