Bombing at Bhumjaithai coalition party office injures one

BANGKOK (TNA) -- A bomb built into a fruit-vendor's cart was remotely detonated near the head office of the main coalition partner in the six-party government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in the Thai capital on Tuesday, seriously wounding one man.

The Police Forensic Science Division and the Metropolitan Police bomb squad collected evidence at the scene and found that a TNT bomb hidden in a gas cylinder filled with gasoline was detonated by remote radio control.

Forensic experts said the blast radius was 20 metres.

The victim was a fruit vendor hired to park his rambutan cart at the Bhumjaithi Party headquarters on Phaholyothin Road.

The blast occurred about 11am when fruit vendor Anek Singkhuntod, 26, pushed his cart to seek shelter from the rain near the entrance of the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters.

Mr Anek was seriously wounded and sent to Bhumibol Hospital. The blast destroyed his cart and windows of nearby offices, but the Bhumjaithai Party premises were undamaged in the incident.

Pol Maj-Gen Saroj Promcharoen, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 2, investigated the explosion scene.

Police initially believed the blast may have been caused by a 15-kilogramme gas cylinder beneath the cart, Gen Saroj said.

Mr Anek later said he was hired by someone to park the cart at the party office, but he decided to move the cart behind the building due to the rain.

Mr Anek insisted he had no idea that the fruit cart contained a bomb or explosive devices, Gen Saroj said, adding that the Bhumjaithai Party might have been targeted by persons wanting to incite disorder.

The Bhumjaithai Party is the main partner of the Democrat-led coalition government.

Meanwhile, Bhumjaithai Party spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said the bombing was meant to damage the party headquarters. He said the party's key figures usually use the entrance near the bombing scene which vendors are restricted from entering.

Mr Supachai said the Bhumjaithai Party's political moves may have dissatisfied and angered some persons, but said he could not with certainty relate the incident to the royally-sponsored cremation of the late Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, former key Red Shirt military strategist, which is being held today. Bangkokians asked to save water

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Metropolitan Waterworks Authority has cautioned people, especially Bangkok dwellers to use water more economically due to the ongoing drought crisis and reducing water supply.

Metropolitan Waterworks Authority Governor, Chareon Passara, asked people to consume water more economically although the country would not experience a water shortage or a drought crisis, similar to the ongoing situation.

Mr Chareon admitted that the El Niño phenomenon also had some effects to the drought crisis in the country while water levels in many dams nationwide were low and not adequate for consumption.

According to the governor, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority at present uses water from the Chao Phraya River and the Mae Klong Dam in the western province of Kanchanaburi. Water resources are expected to be sufficient only until 2027 if no other sources can be found.

Mr Chareon added that the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority might restructure and increase the price of water so people would consume water more economically. He deemed pipe water cost at present very cheap compared to other kinds of utilities.

Bomb Targeting Bhum Jai Thai Party Prematurely Explodes

An explosion occurred close to the opposition Bhum Jai Thai Party headquarters earlier today. Police have brought into custody a man who confessed that he was hired to stage a bomb attack at the party's headquarters.

Metropolitan Police deputy commissioners Police Major General Amnuay Nimmano and Police Major General Sumeth Ruangsawas traveled to Paholyothin Soi 43 to investigate the blast that occurred near Bhum Jai Thai Party headquarters.

The explosion took place just before the assailant approached the Bhum Jai Thai headquarters.

The premature explosion caused serious damage to the fruit cart that carried a gas tank containing a TNT explosive. Two cars parked nearby and a restaurant within the 20-meter radius were severely damaged.

The suspect, Anek Sikhunthod, suffered burns on his face and body. He was admitted to Bhumibol Hospital and will later be transferred to the Police General Hospital for further treatment.

Anek confessed that he and his friend were hired to stage a bomb attack at the Bhum Jai Thai headquarters. He had planned to enter the place with his fruit cart containing the bomb.

However, Anek was forced to take shelter when it began to rain. When his friend called on his mobile phone, the remote-controlled bomb in the gas tank accidentally exploded.

The forensic unit believes that a TNT explosive and gasoline were stored in the gas tank which was designed for a remote detonation. Authorities have requested to review security camera footage to find the getaway car and other suspects believed to be involved in the crime.
