Today, after deciding I would like a burger (First time in months) i read up on here about where to get a decent burger.

To be honest, I fancied that BBQ King place after all the praise - but like the comments said - its too far for me too.

So I got side-tracked onto a link saying that Dukes was good.

So I went.

As I haven't had a burger in ages and had made the trip to the emporium I decided to by a burger from Dukes and one from Mos Burger and then compare them. I sat in the Ramen section to review them in peace.

Dukes Cheese Burger (Quarter Pounder) 159bt inc Onion Rings.

I was really dissapointed. Although these days I try not to eat them too much - I love a burger.

The bun could have been good, i.e it seemed like it was interesting texture wise (not neccessarily good on a burger). However I dont know why - or how but it was greasy to the point i think they must have fried the whole burger (bun and all). I was lost for words to be honest. Presented for takeaway in a foam box split in half it looked depressing. An (Obviously not quarter pound) burger with some see through (???) cheese. A lump (lump) of onion and tomato and a lettuce leaf.

I think had the bun not been so greasy the flavour would have been on par with a normal below par cheap burger, but the grease made it almost inedible.

Mos Burger was half the price of the Dukes burger.

Not too much to say really other than they copy macdonalds well (price and product) Pleasant enough (Too much sauce for my liking - maybe they should put in on the side)

So anybody reccommend a really outstanding burger in Bangkok?

For the money, pretty hard to beat Mosburger. Several notches above anything else under 100 baht, that's for sure. I like the original Mosburger with the suki sauce but they also have regular hamburgers and cheesburgers with no sauce, you dress it yourself with mayo, ketchup, mustard, whatever you like.

Tonight I had one of the best burgers I've ever eaten at Iron Fairies in Bangkok. Not for bargain hunters. They have five varieties on the menu, 350-380 baht. Huge burger served on a wooden cutting board with a knife stuck right down the center of the burger. Fresh Aussie tenderloin grilled on a woodfired grill - you can smell the smoky flavors before you even pick it up. Delicious fresh buns from a bakery that makes them just for IF. Dressed with a couple of different 'secret' sauces made by the Aussie owner.

How much does a burger cost at Duke's Express? I stopped by for onion rings a couple of weeks ago and they were excellent, some of the best I've eaten. Fast and friendly service.

Duke's 1/4 pounders aren't so good. Their other burgers (well, at least the Duke's Burger) were very good.

Used to like Mos Burgers but have gone off them now. Still like their Caesar Dog, though.

Powderpuff - still have to take you up on your offer but I am in Singapore 5 days a week now... but put Gulliver's on our to-do list especially as JFC is nearby.

I've only had a mosburger once before in my life, in the Paragon food court. First and last time for me. I know some people really like them (obviously the Japanese do), but man, it just struck me as having a really strange consistency and taste. I'm just talking the regular hamburger not any of the more unique items. I would much prefer McDonald's over Mos, and that's not saying much!

Mos burger is nothing like McDonalds IMHO.

IMO a McDonald's burger isn't much to crow about, ie, doesn't really taste like much except for a mushy bun and overpowering sauce. By comparison, and for about the same price, a Mosburger has IMO a better bun, better construction/aesthetics, and better flavor overall. They're not for everyone, and are not the typical modern American hamburger, more like the way they used to make burgers along the NY waterfront 60 years ago, ie with seasoned beef and onions. But they sell very well here, and I'm a fan.

Neither is a gourmet burger. Bangkok offers many better burgers, and I've only tasted a fraction of what's available.

You get what you pay for, and I would assume the Duke's Express offering would be better, at close to triple the price. Not that price correlates with quality every time, but in general? Probably so.

I thought that MOS burgers were OK, but not any better than the other fast food places. They are different, but nothing special in my opinion. I felt the same way about White Spot burgers even though they are more expensive.

I like the more healthy roast chicken sandwiches at MOS and they are pretty good at Burger King too.

Your luck you do not have Mikes burger in Bangkok.:whistling:

So I've heard :(

Sorry - not the same but fast food burger same

Will check out the Iron Fairies place.. - hardly ever eat burgers so don't mind splashing out for a special one every now and then. Thanks for the tip.

Try Gullivers in Suk Soi 5. Under 200 baht with cole slaw & fries. Yum.

I'll try that one too thanks.

Man that place has had some crazy price inflation. A few years ago a bacon cheeseburger with fries and slaw was only 130 baht.

I think the thing is mosburger is more like meatloaf than a normal burger. Personally I love them but I can see how others don't

You gotta be joking me...

Whatever MOS Burgers serves is not recognizable as a hamburger, and certainly doesn't taste anything like a hamburger.... especially slathered in the awful, bland sauce they use. I've tried several of their varieties, and won't ever go back again for burgers there.... though their french fries are perfectly fine.

Likewise, I'm no fan of McDonald's burgers, even though they can be somewhat called hamburgers. But to compare MOS Burgers to McDonald's is a serious and undeserved insult to Mickie D's... If I were MD's, I'd sue you for libel for every penny you're worth for a comparison like that.

As for Duke's, I've had nothing but good burger experiences with them... especially the taste and consistency of their meat.

And I've tried both their plain 1/4 bound burger and several of their more expensive toppings ones. The hamburger buns they use, supposedly custom baked for them, are not my favorites, and I frankly wish they'd use something else, though I've never had a greasy bun from them. But in all other respects -- their ground beef, their french fries, large dill pickle spear, large slice of beefsteak tomato, slice of fresh onion and leaf of lettuce -- their burgers are about as good as you will find in Bangkok.

By comparison, the burgers at Hard Rock Cafe are about twice the price for similar portions, and don't taste as good. The burgers I've had at the Garage place at All Seasons Place were pretty awful. The burgers at Outback Steakhouse at Siam Discovery, on the other hand, are pretty good, especially if you get them during their lunch special period when they come with included soup, loaf of brown bread and unlimited soft drink.

Overall, I'd rate Duke's No. 1 and Outback No. 2 by my taste.... But I've yet to try the Fairy place mentioned above.

A wise man once said, "You don't go to McDonald's for hamburgers for a hamburger. You go there for a Big Mac." They are tasty for fast food junk and a set lunch is relatively cheap. I do not go there often, but every once in a while, a Big Mac really hits the spot.

Actually, I'm glad that they are around just to bug all the whingers and loonies who have nothing better to do than whine about them all the time while dining on greasy meat pies, Chang Beer and second-rate bangers and mash.

If I want a real hamburger for a reasonable price, the Duke's certainly fits the bill and I don't have to dress up like a fairy either. :D

That would make sense. It did have a real overly processed consistency and texture.

Not true PP, although Outback's regular menu can take a hit, especially since they add on 17.5% for tax and service charge...

But their lunch deals are very worthwhile, including unlimited drink and extras as you can see below, for just a bit more than the price of a toppings Duke's burger alone....

I wouldn't say the Outback burger is better than Duke's as a burger alone. The Outback meat isn't...but their traditional hamburger bun, nicely toasted, is... However, as a lunch package, it's a good burger at a pretty compelling value.

Don't forget we're talking opinion, here jfchandler. To me a McDonald's burger is barely edible. To each his own, no one here is the ultimate arbiter. Burgers have to be American? I don't see you being so doctrinaire about Mexican food that isn't Mexican ;)

I remember years ago, when I was living in a small town in the countryside in Taiwan, eating Chinese food for months. Went to a McD in the big city nearby and had the most delicious burger of my life. Went back the next day for another one and realized, nope, same crappy MickeyD's burger, my taste buds had to be re-acquainted with it is all :P

Not sure I understand your comment, or maybe you should re-read mine...

I wasn't endorsing McDonald's burgers in any way. I don't care for them at all, and rarely if ever will eat one... If I have to go fast-food, I'd go Burger King, though Thailand BK's are a very poor substitute for those in the U.S.

However, what I was saying was, IMHO, McDonald's burgers can at least be called hamburgers, whereas MOS burgers are some unknown, unidentifiable, rather yucky tasting thing I can't even begin to classify.

And FWIW, I like Japanese food, and Japanese versions of American food. I like veggie burgers if done well, and chicken breast burgers and all other good variations of things. MOS, however, doesn't fit into that category.

You gotta be joking me...

I definitely thought of Mos Burgers as meatloaf... but Wikipedia says it's similar to salisbury steak, which also seems pretty close.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger

I definitely wouldn't compare a Mos Burger to a McDonald's burger, they are quite different.

LOL@sbk - I know exactly what you mean, but Chinese/Taiwanese cuisine is way, WAY better than a McD's burger! But then again, I would kill for one of those nasty greasy things Jack in the Box calls a taco...

Does anyone still go to Discovery Center?

I said "looks like" cuz they aren't getting any of my dosh.

Would prefer to drive to Pattaya & Bob's Bar B Q. Killer onion rings & pulled pork sandwich.

If Pepsi had the brains to open a Taco Bell - say right where that Burger King is at Maneeya Center you would have to wait 4 hours to get inside.

DQ Chill & Grill have a great location at Siam Center.

If you have no problem driving from BKK to Pattaya for a burger, then I'm sure you can manage to find your way from Siam Center nextdoor to Siam Discovery and give the hamburgers at Outback a try.

I wouldn't wait 4 minutes to get inside a Taco Bell....even in Los Angeles, much less Bangkok...

Del Taco on the other hand, that's a different proposition... But they're not owned by Pepsi...
