Govt tightens controls on caffeine beverages

BANGKOK: -- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to tighten the enforcement of advertising regulations for beverages containing caffeine, amid growing concern that inappropriate advertising is encouraging consumers to take caffeine in excessive quantities.

Regulations which came into effect in October 2003 theoretically ban advertisements of caffeine beverages in which consumers are lured with giveaways or prizes.

But FDA Secretary-General Pakdee Pothisiri admitted today that companies were continuing to violate the ban, and were posing a health risk to consumers as a result.

The FDA recently called the manufacturers of caffeine beverages to a meeting, in which they were warned that they would be allowed to continue their current advertising campaigns until they expired, but that after then the legislation would be strictly enforced.

Got this off the web.

Caffeine levels of various beverages:

Coffee 80 mg

Cola 45 mg

Black Tea 40 mg

Flavored Tea 40 mg

Oolong Tea 30 mg

Green Tea 20 mg

White Tea 15 mg

Decaf Tea 5-10 mg

Herbal Tea

0 mg

To eliminate caffeine intake completely, please consider switching to herbal tea, because even decaffeinated tea contains a trace (between 5 and 10 milligrams) of caffeine

Do they ever debate this kind of stuff or is it just the whim of some guy that may have had a bad expresso and wanted to get his own back?

I was going to write alot more but i can't ,i'm starting to get a bit numb from all this rubbish. :o:D

I have to go I need coffee!

good idea ,all that caffeine must be making thais jumpy and twitchy ! nervous systems are under pressure?

and high blood pressure !

I think this caffeine thing is more mental than physical, truly, I can fall asleep while drinking a cup of coffee or cola and I'm nearing 70 years old. Coffee has never had any effect on me, never kept me awake or caused me to get twitchy, nervous, etc.

We get it in our heads that coffee or cola causes certain reactions and then the mindset comes into play and we react accordingly. If you just don't buy into it early on, it has no material effect whatsoever.

All too often, we let "spin" and "hype" dictate how we live and the mind is an awfully powerful tool.

And the companies will continue to defy the government, as they are the government. One of Thaksins biggest supporters just happens to own Nestle Thailand. Prayuth Mahakitsiri who is Deputy TRT leader is also President of the Nestle Group Thailand.

Gotta love it!

It represents the net contents = 150ml (5 fluid ounces).

Bit worring to see that that manufacturers substitute a lot of caffeine for sugar in the so called diet drinks !

RED BULL how much caffiene how much Thai Face

Krating Daeng (Red Bull) Energy Drink = 80mg of caffine.

I like the taste of M-150, but I've kind of wondered about the "150" part of the name.

Easy to explain: Some time ago there was M-100 (bottle of 100 ml) and M-150 (bottle of 150 ml), but M-100 was taken of the market....

I'd be careful with the figures quoted for the Green Tea as I believe this only refers to "home brewed" from a tea bag. Not the pre mixed stuff in the bottles and can's. My wife informs me that a few months ago the Thai language press had a big splurge about the hugely excessive amounts of Caffeine in these products and that they were trying to get some brands taken off the shelves.

I think Thais drink far too much caffeine beverage cos of their juvenile mentality. But what is even worse is the current TV ad using the tsunami to sell the product. OUTRAGEOUS AND UNACCEPTABLE!!!! :o
