Years ago, when I was much younger I was once told that if you played the record 'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen at a crowded party every body would stop what they were doing to listen to it. I tried it once with moderate success. It was a party stopper. Since then I have known a couple of other pieces of music to have the same effect. I saw everyone stop what they were doing in a pub once, when 'Richochet' by Tangerine Dream was played. Later on, when I worked in Spain ' Velvet Mornings' by Demmis Roussoss was the head turner.

A few years ago I came across this again while working in Hamburg. An American Indian who lived in Hamburg at the time called Tony Carey recorded an absolutely brilliant piece of music called ' Room with a View' This was the masterpiece of head turners, an absolute show stopper. Try and listen to it sometime. Anyone else got any pieces of music that have this effect.?

I was at a party recently when everyone stopped what they were doing and listened to a song - Ronan Keating, "you say it best"

I was a bit embarrassed when my wife shared that this was "our song".

A bit of a joke as when I first introduced my wife to my parents, she couldn't speak a word of English, and sat at the table saying nothing. :o

Wow. That's some party you got there, TM. Can I come on over? Sounds like it will go on for some time!

GREAT songs.

TM, glad to see you've got...

You Spin Me Right Round (Techno remix) - Dead or Alive.mp3

.. in that list. Dunno what the "Techno remix" sounds like, but the full 12" of that tune's a winner.

Don't quite think you've got the idea right TM. If everyone stopped what they were doing just to stand and listen at that lot, there would be no future in discos. :o

I suppose another one to add to the list was J'Taime by Serge and Jane Birkin ( remember her from Blow up)

BTW have you heard that Toney Carey number?

I never really had much need to "stop the show" - if I did, I found that going around and winding up all the clocks had a similar effect.

Any form of psychedelic music put into a disco mix will most certainly force a few party swingers to start looking for their coats.

Leonard Cohen has always been notorious for killing even the most boisterous of piss ups. Joni Mitchell can have the same effect.

A group I really do like and have played at a party, loosing a few so-called friends as a result, but most certainly stopping everyone in their tracks, is Third Ear Band.

In my experience playing J'Taime just resulted in a huge upswing in expanded knicker elastic and other similar activities.

Which Toney Carey number?
