TAT governor looks forward to peak season

THE Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) yesterday said that European tourists have started to make early reservations for the tourist peak season in Thailand.

The TAT governor Juthamas Siriwan admitted that currently it is low-season period, and thus the TAT had to put its effort into promoting domestic tourism. She also revealed there would be arrangements for 5 special direct flights from Australia into Phuket per week.

The TAT governor also said the number of tourists at present was close to last year's number, and Thailand's tourism industry was improving as well.

Phuket Provincial Governor Udomsak Assawarangura conferred with representatives from the Tourism Organisation and private tourist operators yesterday on the state of tourism in Phuket, following the December 26 deadly tsunami. Udomsak told the seminar that the tourism industry in Phuket has recovered well, and the province is ready to accommodate tourists during the peak season.

In addition, members also agreed work on the “Phuket Action Plan”, which is aimed at improving the tourism industry in the province in a concrete manner. Public relation activites for the Tourism Organization include promoting Phuket in foreign countries and inviting foreign travel agents and tourism operators to visit Phuket, to assess the tourist destinations.

Recently, the government has allocated about 200 million baht of its budget for Phuket in an effort to restore Pathong beach. According to Vinai Buapradit, Phuket deputy governer, it is expected that the restoration of the beach and its landscape would be finished by September and will be ready to welcome the tourists during the high season.

At present, the TAT’s consultant company is designing the landscape restoration.
