How Many Expats In Thailand

Does anybody out there have any information, or an informed guess, as to how many expats are living in Thailand? I think it would be very difficult to track the exact number, as many are here on tourist visas. But any informed guesses would be great, or any dredged up stats. Especially the number living here in BKK.

some of which don't live in Thailand. But I would hate to start using that as a base figure to start adding and subtracting from.

Thanks!

You could search through previous posts, I believe someone provided a spreadsheet with some Government numbers on it, personally I thought they were a bit low.

Yes there have been at least two fairly recent threads on this topic. Suggest you forum search and/or scroll back in (I think) the general forum and the business forum and see if you can find the most recent (which in turn referenced the next most recent thread). in a nut-shell the stats that could be found - even with fairly concerted searching - were outdated and patchy.

Why the interest. A government watchdog or something ? :)

A UK gov't official trying to work out how much it will cost to upgrade pensions for those living in Thailand, I dont think so.

Your right but strangeish topic for a 3 post newbe. Perhaps all will be revealed soon.

Last Uk gov admits it's lost 500,000 illegals in blighty so perhaps wants to balance it's books a bit with those who have left. :D

I know it is a silly question but how is it possible to "loose" 500,000 people in a country.

The estimated resident population of the UK was 61,792,000 in mid-2009 according to the government http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=6

Question: How do you think the UK government keeps the illegal and asylum seekers figures inside the governments pledged levels?

Answer: They just issue a shit load of passports, (make them UK citizens) Well done. How true it is I don’t know, but I read of a case some time ago, that an asylum seeker in the UK went on the run, (afraid he was going to be deported) police caught this guy 3 years later, did some checks…..Found out that in his absents he had been granted UK citizenship…………Go UK Gov!!

The Thai Government should know how many work permit issued,. plus how many non imm. B - O etc, how many retirement visas, etc.

Double the number not coming from the government (due to visa runner, expired visa people, etc) and you should have an approximate number of the expats in Thailand.

All this could be considered a bit sketchy and vague. Pedantry applications could easily be used as comparatives. What is meant by the term "expat"? Are we talking: real long-timers or old-hands with neither the desire or intent of returning to said homeland? Foreign residents that split the year back-and-forth? Contracted short-timers? Or even the run-of-the-mill wannabes. I believe this romantic terminology as an "expatriate" has lost it's realistic use throughout successive generations. Then there is this odd circle of Asian born and raised {to European parents} "foreigners", that know nothing else - and have rarely made contact or resident with their {supposed} home country. What is an expat.....??
