Gambling

I recently hears a few horror stories about substantial losses in gambling whereby the carnage is unbelievable. One lady lost her English husband, 2 houses in Pattaya, 2 businesses(Bars) and her house in the village. All because of gambling. Another lady gambled away her husband's small shop which he had bought for their retirement, also their condo and a house were lost. Now, both of these stories are true, both the men I know personally. Also know their wives(ex in the first case) so I find it difficult to understand how it could get so bad in relatively short times. I also know a guy who reckons he limits his wife to 300 baht per day for gambling as "she can't stop". Apparently she lost 100,000 baht to her family just after they married, said she didn't know what they were teaching her???????

I did realise gambling was a problem for some, but didn't know it was so bad. I mean, houses, businesses stec. That is big business for some people in the illegal gambling scene. I wonder how much co-ercion is involved?

Any other horror stories?

When people get low class uneducated wives, crap like this kind of comes with it. Don't think you can do much about it, other than make better partner choices.

Gambling is not limited to the lower classes. Evidence the hiso Chinese heading to the border every day.

you think its bad here. try going to poipet and there you will see how big a problem it is. everyday thousands and thousands of thais cross the border to squander money they dont have. most sitting around with long faces waiting for the afternoon bus back to thailand. to then repeat the process once again the next day.

cant tell you how many ive had come up to me asking if they can borrow a 1000 baht, pawning their gold or mobile phones. even going to the extreme of handing over their passports to get a lifeline of 2000 baht to try and win back some of their losses. the funniest ones are the girls that get onto the farang husbands/boyfriends to send money via western union or put money into their bank so that they can get someone to cross the border for them to withdraw it out with an atm card.

even had a few ladies ask me if they can share my room and offer their services in return of a few thousand baht. huh.gif

Exaggeration ? I dont think so

In the 3 years i have been living here i have come to the conclusion that a very high percentage of thais can not handle or be trusted with large sums of money.

Can you please give some examples, are you talking about your GF or Wife or every other Thai except her, if you're talking about your wife or GF than that's fine, but that hardly encompasses the whole population does it ?

I do respect your opinion as you must have first hand experience with Thai people that are close to you, luckily I have not, therefore when somebody says " They are all at it " that is simply not true, it's an exaggeration, a generalisation that is false.

In fact the only people to rip me off or attempt to rip me off since I have been here are Farangs. And yes, I have been caught out by lending money to so called friends and then never see them again, but not all Farangs are bad and it would be a gross exaggeration to suggest that they are.

When it comes to not being able to handle or be trusted with large sums of money, the subset of Thai's that you know are in good company: Bernie Maddof, Citibank, AIA, Freddie Mac, Fannae Mae, Lehman Brothers, JP Morgan/Chase, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Bear Stearns, The State of California, The US government, the Greek government, the Spanish government, the Italian government, the Irish government, the British government, the Argentine government, and, and...

There was a time when every Englishman I knew was a lying, conniving, money-grubbing leach. I stopped associating with him. Later, I met other Englishmen who were perfectly honorable.

Yes i was Talking about my wife or X wife i should say..Up until last year when i decided to walk away from all the shit ...

And now i have met some one who is not only the complete opposite ,She comes from a good family , well educated and as a good job and is more than capable of taking care of her self financially .

So that is why i stated that there is a high % of Thais and not referring to all Thais .

And as far as some farangs go well lets say no more

And i class a friend as some one who i have grown up with or know for a very long time and if i can i will help them out in any which way i can .

helping some one out i have only just met a few times in a bar around town well they can kiss my ass

You need to get out a bit more. Have a look at the normal run of the mill Thai funeral, especially the period after the monks have left.

You know what the latest craze here is??. Bingo, Bingo, fricking Bingo, and they not playing for bottle tops anymore!.

I would not venture a guess to the % of Thais who gamble legally or illegally. The government lotto is probably supported by those who can least afford it. In CM the lotto peddlers seem nearly as numerous as noodle vendors. Every village I have been in have illegal lotto, gambling at funerals, chicken/beetle fights, card games establishments as well as the government system. I only seen the number of opportunities to gamble that would compare to Thailand in areas of legal gambling. When magic people and even monks promote the lucky numbers, as well as dreams, car number, deaths, births, etc I would say there is a huge gambling problem in Thailand.

I personally knew a lady who committed suicide over gambling debts/loses, leaving a son and husband who had both tried to help her get out of the circle. I have acquaintances whose wives are into gambling heavy and they just try to keep loses to a bearable amount. Granted this happens all over the world, but in my experience, I have never been exposed to the number of cases in other countries I have lived in like I have in Thailand.

I would say that I have been " Out " in Thailand quite a lot.

I am not saying ALL Thai people don't gamble, what I am saying is, not ALL Thai people gamble.

Problem with this Forum, paranoid Farangs who think all things Thai are out to get them, all Thai women are bad, all Thai men are drunks, all Thais are bad drivers etc etc etc...Them and us, we good, them bad.......

It's simply not the case in the real world, if it was, you wouldn't be here, nor would I.

Mrs's sisters husband is into it and spends most of his wages on gambling, the rest on drinking, they both work and she keeps the house and kids on her wages.

She has just found out he has about 300kb of debts from gambling, he has pawned her gold and even taken the money out of the kids money box.

Last night she gave the Mrs two pawn shop tickets and some money to go get some of the gold back and keep it here, she doesnt trust it in their home (his mothers house) in case he finds it again.

She would like to leave him but has nowhere to go.

Or second to that keep all your cash under the floor boards !!!

Gambling is not limited to the lower classes. Evidence the hiso Chinese heading to the border every day.

The difference is that the lower classes tend to ignore some key issues like not losing more than one can afford to, not borrowing at above market rate interest to pay for one's habit, house edge, etc.
