Pattaya Turning Into A Flea Market?

It seems like Pattaya is turning into a giant flea market. First it was the junk sale outside of Avenue. Then came the junk sale outside of Central (2nd road). And now it seems like every other day there is junk for sale on beach road. Anybody else dislike the junk sale along the beach? Makes it very congested.

Nah it don't bother me, I've more important things to worry about whilst in Pattaya, tell you what though, if it bothers you so much why don't you go and buy a load of tins of flea powder and spray, and douse the bugg**s in it, might move em on...

Oh here's 50 cyber baht to put towards...Enjoy....

Well, I get the OP's point, but what bothers me about it is that almost all of what they are selling is total crap.

I get it, but Pattaya Beach Rd has been like it for years, try walking down the pavement right hand side from Walking St, and yes it is crap, infact I can't remember the last time I bought something..

I'm referring to the beach side of the road. It seems like people are setting up booths several times a week to sell mostly junk. The beach side used to be somewhat pleasant to walk on, but lately with all the crappy commerce it's not so pleasant.

Anybody know if this will be a regular thing on beach road in the future?

Yes it is crap...and it's almost the same crap as those sold at Thepprasit weekend market, the Avenue flea market, floating market and at least a dozen other places. Even the hawkers that come by when one is relaxing on the beach (Jomtien and Wongamat) sell similar crap. I wish there was more variety in all that crap.

Well somebody's gotta be buying the crap or they wouldn't be there selling it.

It's the same the world over in tourist haunts, look at the crap they sell on Blackpool seafront. The only difference is that the Blackpool stuff is expensive crap.

It's been the same in Thailand, and Pattaya especially, for as long as I've known the place. the pavements (sidewalks) are not for pedestrians. They are for motorbikes and vendors, anyone dumb enough to walk places in Thailand (like me) can either stumble through it all or take to the road (like I do).

It'll change the day the sun rises in the west.

I'd noticed the new market on Beach Road, it does make walking along that side tedious now. I'd assumed that it was a temporary thing for the upcoming two-day Buddha holiday next week? Is that right, or is City Hall trying to make some spare cash by renting out the pavements/sidewalks to hawkers?

This is what I want to know. Will this be a regular occurrence? It seems like there are vendors on the beach walkway several times a week for several days. It's like commercial overload now in Pattaya.

Some people like it, but I think it ruins the beach atmosphere. But then again, Thais are good at ruining things.

This is the most stupid question which I have seen here.

Don't you have time to think about something else ??

I would say if that junk could not sell , they would have never returned to the place.

it's Pattaya customers who has decent of money for living more than the rich.

Then, this market is matched !! so ??

It is in my opinion a greedy idea to turn every squerecentimeter in commercial sale zones. I guess therefore they wanna get rid of the hockers. The hockers dont bother me. But with all those saleshops on the baywalk, i could not even walk with the dog. They causing even more traffic jams then before (to load and unload their items). Its also unfair for all the peaple who pay expensive high rentals and key money for their shophouses to sale their stuff opposite the beach. It doesn't bother me directly, as i never go to the Pattaya Beach already since years (no parking space for my car).

I recomend, the City Hall should take a littel trip to Waikiki. So maybe they would get a idea, how to develop the beachside nicely. It is absolutely perfect in Waikiki.

Aren't many of these recent beach road vendors folks from Bangkok who have had very little income these past few months with all the turmoil & subsequent lack of visitors/customers? If Pattaya city officials have invited these folks to display their wares here, maybe thatz not such a bad thing. Everybody's gotta live. If they need a market to sell to, and Pattaya has some potential customers, then good luck to all. However, I agree that most of it's poor quality CRAP, and buyers should definitely be(a)ware... which piqued my memory:

Steve Martin used to say, "Goin' down to the Turd Museum." "Hey, don't laugh," he'd say, "Some of that crap's worth a lot of money... no sh_t!"

Crap it may be however people must be buying it otherwise the stall holders would give up. Personally I don't care how many markets they set up around the city since it creates employment and may cut down the crime rate.

I saw what the OP meant last night. It is a dreadful, depressing mess. There were also a number of aggressive panhandlers, including an American! This new thing has NOTHING to do with the temporary market days they had set up to help the vendors from Bangkok. That is probably where they got the idea to make this more permanent. It is an eyesore on top of an eyesore.

I think tourists may be OK with the congestion of walking through that gauntlet once or twice, but for residents it is a true degradation of the already severely stressed quality of life here. Oh well. I don't agree about market forces. These people are low end people who will be happy with tiny earnings. Unless city hall kicks them out, they aren't going away.

Coming from our resident baht bus riding member the above is priceless.

Actually, his comment was pretty reasonable. Seems like you have a chip on your shoulder.

No chip on my shoulder.

As someone else has already mentioned, "Unfortunately, it's a thai thing."

Their country and their city, in fact the nature of the goods on sale may well be an idication of the direction in which Pattaya is headed, the crap for sale may be comensurate with the quality tourists we keep hearing of.

The , " These people are low end people who will be happy with tiny earnings" says it all really.

As for, "but for residents it is a true degradation of the already severely stressed quality of life here". If things are that bad why would anyone subject themselves to it.

I could leave Thailand tomorrow and not give it so much as a backward glance, but I havent saddled myself with property here and have alternatives.

I realize others may not have the luxury of leaving.

Maybe JT could do a poll, along the lines of, how much worse would things have to get before you vote with your feet and leave.

For some Pattaya is paradise on earth, and no matter what happens they will stay, the pull of the hairy magnet blinds them to whats going on around them.

The market on beach road is well tacky - par for the course perhaps

worst of all - I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'd never seen - are the Tsurnami DVD stalls with the TVs showing bloated corpses and christ knows what else

appalling

Don't forget the Santika disco fire video!

It's getting really schizo. First Central Pattaya Beach mall, luxury mall of international standards. Now this crap. The city planners should be ashamed at themselves for allowing that beach market to develop this way. It is a SLUM.

At 7AM yesterday morning I tried to take my early morning walk along Beach road and was nearly hit by a piece of piping for a stall being swung round by a Thai youth . When I spoke to him he was most abusive. further on there were a group trying to get Indian tourists to buy shorts -- one pair split as the Thia sales person held it up against a rather large Indian trying to show him it would fit. The tide was low and people were having to wade out to the boats so a good opportunity for selling but what rubbish the sales people were pestering them with.Last evening I could not walk down Beach road. except on the road itself. The Indian tailors on the one side competing with stalls selling porno video's near Pattaland and stalls selling rubbish on the other. By the way what regulations regarding food safety and hygiene apply to the food sellers there and are they enforced????

The last time I heard the phrase "Low end people" it was from an obnoxious hi-so Thai.

Yeah, sorry, that did sound bad and sounding like a Thai-so was not intentional. I meant they weren't big players in the business department.
