Hi,

a my mate is on overstay for 4 month. He entered the kingdom on a 30 day visa on arrival stamp from england.

He wants to take a flight to KL now to clear up his overstay and come back the same day.

Is there anything he needs to worry about or can he just pay the 20,000baht fine at the airport, fly to KL and return the same day into thailand?

He could be detained for investigation with that long an overstay but that does not appear to happen often so a payment/departure is most likely under current policy.

If at airport it would be detained to check police records so could involve detention until done but as said this does not appear to be normally happening at present.

I wouldnt listen to all this malarky. I just paid a 20k overstay at the Immigration in Nong Khai and they just laughed. When I entered Laos their Immigration laughed also and asked if I would like to overstay in their country. Paid the 20k, the man smiled and said see you soon.

Went into Vienteiene, got my Non "B" visa the next day and was back in LOS with no hatle. Dont worry mate.

Go to the airport with a one way ticket to KL. Pay the 20,000 Bt overstay fine. The real problem is if he gats caught somewhere else before he goes to the airport, no good saying "I am going to pay tomorrow at the airport". He will be arrested.

The reason I say go to KL on a one way ticket is that when he returns from KL the immigration officer here may want to see evidence of a booking for onward travel.
