Chopsticks ‘cancer risk’

BANGKOK: -- Some disposable chopsticks, widely used in many restaurants, may pose cancer risks, a recent newspaper reports.

The Medical Science Department is checking the report that sodium hydrosulfite, used to bleach wood, was found in disposable chopsticks. The chemical was found in chopsticks made of softwoods but not those made of bamboo. The bleaching agent can melt if the chopsticks are used in boiling food.

Buthealth inspectors have failed to find any hazardous contaminants.
