Bomb aims to destabilise country, Senator says

Politicians yesterday condemned Sunday's deadly blast in front of the Big C Supercentre on Rajdamri Road as an evil act, while the opposition suspects it was con-trived to let the government avoid lifting the state of emergency.

Senator Lertrat Ratanavanich said the incident was meant to further destabilise the country.

"It can't be identified who is responsible for the bombing. Such incidents happen many times but we can't find the perpetrators. Please don't make ground-less accusations that it was done by the anti-govern-ment group or the government itself," he said.

Even if the emergency decree was in force, such inci?dents occurred and police could not prove who the cul-prits were, he said.

The government must be more careful with places exposed to risk and expedite the building up of national unity and reconciliation. However, the government must not let itself be undermined by the group, Lertrat said.

Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit also denounced those behind the explosion.

"It might be an attempt by government supporters who want to keep the state of emergency. But the gov-ernment should not take this chance to retain the emer?gency decree as it would spoil law enforcement and make people accustomed to harsh laws," he said.

Senator Vicharn Sirichai-ekkawat, deputy chairman of the Senate committee on current affairs, said the emergency decree was a law that limits people's rights but was not always effective in suppressing violence.

"Look at what happened in the three southernmost provinces. The state of emergency has been in use for years but explosions still go on. It doesn't help improve the situation.

"However, people become used to the law. Importantly, local people cannot tell the difference when the law is imposed and not imposed. The emer-gency decree seems meaningless in Bangkok and the provinces where the state of emergency remains," he said.

The government should try cancelling the state of emergency and if the situation does not improve, it could invoke the law again, he said.

"The key to reconciliation is forgiveness. But it's been almost two years that the government has been chasing (the anti-government red shirts). It even enrages people and makes them ready to defy the gov-ernment," he claimed.

The Democrat Party spokesman said the bombing was an evil and cruel act that hurt innocent people. It was considered terrorism and alarmed people. Authorities should hunt down the wrongdoers and beef up security, especially at dangerous places.

The government want to get rid of the SoE to please internatuional freinds. The reds want it to stay so they can go ad nauseum about loss of their rights (while never once gioving a toss about the rights of all the people they trampled all over recently). Plant a bomb timed nicely to go off just after you lost an election that you had made into a referendum on the red action and thereby knock that defeat and implicit rejection of the action off the front pages and at the same time prevent the government from being able to end the SoE. Nice result for team red although a tad worrying for Thaksin it seems who probably wont want it to spiral further.

Totally agree, and on top of all of the above comment, the pt / udd / reds / thaksin offering absolutely nothing whatever in terms of moving forward. Nothing!

Exactly. Compare

The PTP used it as an opportunity to attack the government. The Democrats said the wrongdoers should be hunted down, making no statement as to what it thinks side they're on. From the propaganda scoring coming from the PTP side, it's not to hard to reach a conclusion as to the origins of the bomb.

Idiot statement of the day came from Senator Vicharn Sirichai-ekkawat:

"The key to reconciliation is forgiveness. But it's been almost two years that the government has been chasing (the anti-government red shirts). It even enrages people and makes them ready to defy the gov-ernment,"

Maybe if the red shirts stopped their violence, terror and murder then the government wouldn't need to chase them?
