I agree with you Explorer, although I was more dissapointed with Mr and Mrs Smith, there was no story line really, it was pathetic.

They were supposed to be the "big hits", but failed miserably :o

First 30 minutes were okay, after that it died a death. Can't understand what Spielberg's fascination with Cruise is, I can't remember there being a single scene in the film that he wasn't in. A good actor he may be but there's no need to make a film so heavily centred on him.

Stick with Jeff Wayne's musical version. :o

Lie down, put on a decent pair of headphones, crank up the volume and let your mind take care of the imagery. :D

I used to do that after a bong, when I was a nipper. :D

OK....I guess a bong is an optional extra for the list :o

.......but wouldn't the "OOOOohhhhhhYYyyyaaaaaaaaahhh" sound of the heat ray scare the shit out of you? :D

still, nothing could've saved this snorefest of a movie... :o  :D

Thanks for saving me the time and price of admission. I had a feeling it was going to be a turkey.

What are the odds on any remake being as good as or better than the original?

A new thread perhaps? :D

I thought War of World was good, but not great. FX were super, however I was a little disappointed by the ending. (seemed too hurried) 50s version was much better in my view as far as story goes.

I thought it was a great movie fx were excellent, and Spielberg’s direction was well on form with lots of tension and great set pieces. I also enjoyed the original, I thought this was as good. Well worth seeing, one of the few movies this year that I think did live up to its pre publicity!

Agreed :o

Did'nt even bother watching the last 30 mins of Mr & Mrs Smith.

War of the worlds has great effects but weak story and the ending was too quick and simple.

I've yet to see WOTW but I saw Mr & Mrs Smith last week and it was just an over budgeted, unrealistic action fest featuring two already very good looking people who I could tell had been touched up and hairsprayed with every scene.

Even the blood and dirt was applied by fashion designers to the face and all the movie said to me was 'Your life will never be this exciting, you'll never look this cool or have a wife this sexy but watch anyway 'cause we're gonna spend oodles of money smashing up brand new cars and creating expensive props that feature for a matter of seconds because we know we can and because this fest of sex, celebrity pairing and violence will appeal to the common masses'.

Which it did. :D

But it was worth watching Angelina Jolie, I'm sure Andrex have done well out of this film.

Taking the missues to see it tommorrow night . If Khun Yai wants to babysit for a few hours :D

Read alot of reviews on IMDB, good and bad. One thing I will not be taking with me to the movie is any expectation that this movie is linked to HG Wells or Jeff Wayne's brilliant musical. No Thunderchild, or artillary man or Victoria England :o

I never liked the 50's? American version either, had little to do with the book, I guees we can thank that other Wells guy :D

Oh well, I expect it to be enjoyable ....I will leave it to that until tommorrow

I agree the 50's version had nothing to do with the book and this new version had much of what was in the book, and anyway we are talking about a movie that dates back to the fifties, I guess time for a remake. I also saw the trailer for KING KONG, That original movie is from the 30's. and anyway alot of people bring their feeling's and expectations to movie watching, a movie is a chance to relax and escape and then think what would you do in that situation and remember guys it's only a movie!!!! :D

Saw the movie. I admit, it wasn't so bad. My wife fell asleep half way through , but she does that every movie. I hint of advice taking a Thai to see a movie...bring a blanket . Maybe it just my other half, but everytime we see a movie the a/c is cause for a real whinge.

Oh well, I noticed Spielberg made a few links to HG Wells. The scenes in the cellar. Tim Robbins was a cross between the artillary man and the curate ?

I still think they could have squeezed the Thunderchild in there, maybe as an aircraft carrier and a huge battlescene.

For a hundred odd baht it is not really a waste of money , two hours of VERY loud sound effects and some entertainment. Hmmm, maybe 6/7 outta ten :o

  • 2 weeks later...

What a weird movie. It started off ok, and the effects were great, but are we really meant to take those long-legged vehicles seriously?

And what was that ending all about? The film just gave up and they decided that the aliens were defeated by a germ of some kind? How weak was that.

My GF summed it up hilariously when we walked out of the cinema: "It looked like they ran out of budget and had to finish it quickly."

Your gf is very close to my impression of many hollywood movies. They have a general idea for a film, shoot a bunch of footage and don't know how to wrap it up and tie the string into a bow. The movies end abruptly and I feel I'm being hustled out the door. Thank you for coming, get out... next! :o

Yeah .. i know what you mean. I mean, come on . . these aliens are so intelligent that they buried equipment under the earth thousands of years ago, yet too dumb to do an analysis of what germs there are that's likely to kill them.

Reminded me of that crap movie about crop circles with Mel Gibson recently. It was actually a tense, scary movie until the end let it down again. In that movie, the invincible alien was killed by . . . . wait for it . . . . .water. For goodness sake.
