Hi everybody,

i am guessing that already a lot of people asked this. My boyfriend is coming to work in Thailand. Currently I am in thailand, Hat Yai and he will come in couple of months. I have educational visa, since I am a student at University, but he will come to work and I dont know what is a procedure for that. Do I need to find him any job before he comes or not? I saw that there are a lot of different visas, I dont know which one he should apply for since he would like to work here. Where you get a work permit? How long can he stay and work here? How does he renew visa, and work permit?

Any comment is welcomed

I apologize for asking the same questions as other people probably...

Thanks to all

Your boyfriend can come to Thailand to look for work on a tourist visa. When he finds a job he will need the company to sponsor his work permit, a non-immigrant "B" visa, and the actual work permit issued by the Labor Department..

Hi, a workpermit is not easy obtained. You need a company supporting that and it goes in combination with a non-immigrant B visa, also needs to be supported by a company.

You can not arrive in Thailand and apply for a non-b visa, nor a workpermit. A company must provide documentation, employment letters and tax statements.

So essentially yes, you need to find him a job first. Please note this is note easy and could take a while.

Another option is for him to start his own business, I believe for about 80,000 baht through lawyers, he can set up a company and with that get a visa and a WP, but maybe the "experts" on the forum can give a more detailed answer to that.

Non-b visa's can only be obtained through thai embassies abroad, not in Thailand itself and a workpermit is issued by the ministery of labor.

Workpermit will be renewed yearly, and so does the visa. One goes hand in hand with the other.

i hope this helps

I am little bit confused now, because InterestedObserver says one and farangkeenog says different. As I understood he can or can not come on tourist visa and look for a job here and then change on the other one with a work permit when he finds a company that would give that. And one more question.. I didnt get it, that B visa can be only issued in his country, which is Croatia. It is not possible to get it in Thailand? Or is is possible to go in a close country to get it...

I have a lot of questions.. :)

There is a list a mile long of jobs foreigners cannot do because it is against the law here in Thailand to do any job a Thai can do. Being a native English speaker is about the only job. Starting his own business is an option. To just show up in Thailand and think he will find a job is almost impossible unless he has some world class skill no one else has. Without world class skill or native English speaker from USA, UK, he won't get a job period

Yes I am aware of that... And I know that he can not do a lot of jobs here, but anyway he wants to try.. I didnt mean like that, just to show up and find a job, it is impossible to find it like that everywhere not only in Thailand. I have been in Thailand many times, and staying for a longer period and I know how the things work here... But I am doing different thing here, so I dont know about getting a job and how that works with visa and permit..

For every foreign work permit the Thai company has to hire 2 additional Tthai people. The work permit itself costs allot of money and the company also has to show 2,000,000 thb in capital for each foreign work permit it issues. That is why companies will not hire foreigners unless they have some very special skill because it cost the company so much money. From Croatia he cannot teach English. I really have no idea what job he can do but my honest feeling is he cannot get a legal job with a work permit. The economy is very bad here

Not entirely correct !

It mainly depends on the kind of business in which you seek employment. If that happens to be education, the rule about the ratio of Thais versus Foreigners does not apply. In that case Company capital in measured.

With regards to the kind of visa one should enter the country with, the same applies again; if the individual is seeking employment in education, entry with a valid tourist visa is allowed. After entry into Thailand, the future employer, in colaboration with the Ministry of Education will then (if all criteria are met) sponsor the transfer from Tourist status to NON-B status. All done in Bangkok.

On the issuance of the NON-B (validity 3 months) is completed, a workpermit must be applied for and should be issued by the Ministry of Labour; provided all criteria are met by both the prospective employee and employer. Once a workpermit is issued, it is back to Immigration, who will then extend the 3 month NON-B to a one year extension, based on employment or it will run concurrent with the duration of the work permit if that is less than one year.

Cost of the transfer from Tourist to NON-B (3 months) THB 1,900

Cost of the work permit THB 3.750

Cost of the NON-B extension THB 1,950

I hope this has added some clarification......

He can look for work with a Tourist Visa.

He can apply for a Work Permit with a Tourist Visa if he finds a job and has the correct paperwork.

He cannot be issued with a Work Permit with a Tourist Visa.

He will have to take the Work Permit application receipt to a Thai Consulate and apply for a Non B Visa.

Once he has the Non B Visa he can collect the Work Permit.

To be honest he will not find it easy.

Yes a lot... Thanks...

He finished for a cook, so I am guessing that he first try to find a job as a cook in some western restaurants or hotels. But if he can't find it we will try to look something else..

I have work permit now and visa multientry 1year, extended 1time. if i not workin anymore and i lose my work permit what happend my visa? I must go out country or what??? Thanks

You are on a multiple entry NOn-B, this remains valis wether you have a work permit or not.

Only an extension of stay based on working in Thailand becomes invalid when you lose your job.

Posted

If your permission to stay is based on Non-B visa issued by Thai consulate abroad as I believe, termination of employment does not affect your permission to stay. Only if your permission to stay is based on extension of stay linked to employment issued by Thai immigration, on the last day of working you will have to leave the country (or apply for 7 day extension at immigration - fee 1,900 baht)

Anybody can explain me how to change from tourist visa to non immigrant B visa if you find a job? I would appreciate step by step instructions, and where to go for it.

Posted

1. Apply for a work permit and get a wp3 form from the labour office,

2. visit a Thai consulate abroad with the wp3 form and papers from company and apply for a non-B visa abroad

3. return to Thailand and get a permission to stay in Thailand for 90 days on the non-B and go to the labor office to get the work permit

4. once you have the work permit you can start working

5. In the last 30 days of your 90 day permission to stay visit immigraiton with company papers and work permit to get a 1 year extension of stay from immigration
