Impressive Engine Re-Build.

Recommended Posts

As many of you may know, I wrecked the conrod bearings in pistons 1 and 4 (2001 GSXR, 750), also resulting in a damaged crankshaft. All the parts and correct bearings were imported and I am having Song, the guy from behind Seacon Square rebuild it. I just wanted to point out that has he has done a great job, as I watched through most of it. We washed every part together and of course oiled it as we put it together. He had his own knowledge of the position the pistons must be put back in, the bearing codes, etc, and used a Suzuki manual (downloaded on his laptop, the same one I have at home) to put it back together with all the new o-rings, and gaskets. He had the sealant and a torque wrench as well to build it and apply the correct "tightness" to the bolts, initially and final. Today we will lift it in and tomorrow finish getting it started. To take note he also checked the valve clearance and pressure in the pistons. I will take it for a spin probably and Tuesday and let yall know how it is.

So no promises yet as I haven't driven it yet, but so far this mechanic seems to be doing great and I didn't have to tell him anything, though I did confirm many things to make sure he did understand. Takes just under a week because he balances the job with his other customers as well, and the price of labor is about 5,000 baht not including parts, rings, oil, etc.

Yea in Bangkok. Just behind the Seacon Square off of Srinakarin Rd. on that little road that you take to go to the race track they have behind there. The little road is just south of seacon and runs along the side.

Unfortunately, I'm selling the bike and some guy wants to take it right when it's built back up. Selling it for 140,000 with real green book. I might have to get him to let me drive it for 2 days and go a little trip with my wife first before he buys it.

Going to Canada to take an engineering degree. I'm young and I can't teach English on some shitty wage.

Awww. We understand completely. I hope you love it there in Canada and don't come back. Your presence here will be missed. Not.

Thanks for posting Lenny. As already mentioned here, good mechanics are as rare as hens teeth, so any first hand info on a decent one is always welcome.

Good luck on selling the bike and don't listen to anyone knocking you for trying to improve your life/education <_<

P.S. Do you have a 'phone number for this guy?

Yea I have his number. His English isn't that great, but he knows all the technical terms and can say/understand stuff like "check the pressure in the piston," "valve clearance," and "initial torque", "final torque," and the terms for all the engine/bike parts. Phone # - 0814570042

I always find it easier to communicate face-to-face. I usually just speak Thai unless it's technical terms I don't know.

Judas you always manage to come in and save me from getting bashed or picked on, but please don't worry. I'm not THAT sensitive. ;)

Canada isn't that bad. Whats with all the negative responses.

You basically cursed making a living here as a teacher,so, expect any teachers to take offense, right?

...actually I don't care what you do, it just reminded me of foreigners in Thailand in general who complain about Thailand, so why stay?

Anyhow yeah good luck

Well for me 40,000/mon is a shitty wage, and I don't have teaching qualifications nor a degree so technically I have to teach illegally, and I already tried it and don't like teaching. I love Thailand and if I could get 80-90-100k per mon teaching I would do it. One can get jobs like this in Thailand if they are a qualified teacher in say England already. Had a couple guys I knew making 100k+, but only because they had years of experience teaching in the UK before coming here and were qualified teachers.

Besides work I do have the odd complaint about the system here and the way business is no disorganized and illegitimate, but money aside, I enjoy more positives then negatives. I'l probably come back in 20 years or something and I sure will be here for visits often.

Wow... I love to tease Lenny, but even I find that's a bit harsh... You must be a teacher, huh? He didn't diss teaching, just the wage ;) And the way this kid goes through bikes I have to agree he'll need more than your average teachers salary to keep even one of his bike running

Good luck Lenny, don't let the haters get you down!

Happy Trails!

Tony

Well anyways, the farang guy that was going to buy my bike for sure, said he no longer had the funds as he lost some work, and only has 125k now because he needed living expenses for the next month. I can't sell it for 125k.

Guess what his job is? Teaching. :D And like me he doesn't have a degree or anything.

So now I can drive it before it's sold. On Wednesday early morning me and my wife will be going to Burirum. Hope it's not raining!

And if anyone wants the bike it'll be 150k baht with new paint, no scratches, etc, etc, or 140k baht if you wanna take it with the scratched up fairing.

2001 GSXR 750, I believe nearing 40k kilos but not sure because its at the shop. He said I can go observe him finishing up the process tomorrow.

LOL!

Well- if you get it running again don't break it before it's sold!

What's up with the scratched fairings? Some more drama that you didn't tell us about?

Good luck and happy trails!

Fairs fair, if you get it running right, with a proper engine build and clean green book, thats an attractive price (tho I would have pulled his arm off at 125 if it was 140 asking.. And your leaving).

On Phuket that would be a very cheap sportbike..

But as I said.. get it running right first.

Well that farang teacher just called me back saying he has 135k baht and will pay for the name change as well, though I was expecting that at 140k as well. I kinda mumbled about and about and finally said sure because I want to sell it quick to send the sponsorship application in and it also means I don't have paint it, put new signal lights on it and repair the carbon intake tube. It's basically the same as making it look nice and selling for 145k with him paying the name change fee. But I did tell him I need to use it on Wednesday and Thursday, and he won't be free until Sunday, so there is always time to change my mind or someone to to make a better offer. :D

Also, the business will be sold in a month or so and we will have no where to park the bike and don't want to take it to Burium. After selling everything we were going to go wait in Burirum for a while and have low expenses( with her family) . I might become a monk for a bit, learn some Muay Thai and of course teach the wife some solid English. If I have this bike sitting around waiting to be sold then we have to stay in Bangkok until it's sold and spend money on renting a place with a decent place to park. Usually I park in inside the business, and couldn't accept parking it outside with all the scooters with new paint, etc.

Well, it finished today and it started on the the first try and idled great off the start. Didn't run hot and seemed about the same as before. I have only put it to about 7k rpm so far, when I drove it home (about 30 min). It's seems very smooth, and maybe bit more quiet and "tight-feeling" than before. Tonight I will go for a longer cruise to make sure it seems ok, before me and wife go to Burirum with it tomorrow. Also, here are some pics of it as of 5 minutes ago, also showing the fairing damage that it has. In the one pic I taped up the left carbon intake a bit, so it looks really ugly, but for the most part it still looks great! :D

Oh my... Those high res pics sure aren't flattering... Has the potential buyer actually seen the bike? And if he has he's willing to pay ~135k for it? Sorry Lenny but that is one seriously worn and tattered bike... Buyer ought to get a brand new Ninja 250R or spend just a bit more to get a near-new Kawa Ninja 650R. Your bike, sorry to say, looks like a serious money pit... :ermm: Good luck my man!

Well thanks. :(

Anyways, I went on another trip just now and it revs so smooth. I started slow of course and very slowly started approaching high rpms through out my hour ride, and eventually got it up to 12,000 rpm, smooth all the way up, slowly climbing, to not startle the engine.

Seems smoother and better than before. I've never opened up the throttle even close to all the way yet though.

BTW. It's never been a money pit for me except for my own mistake with the engine oil, but before that, never had any problems. :P

Yes he has seen the bike, during the process on the engine re-build as well. If you ask me, he is getting a good deal. :)

Paint the other fairing I already have and swap, add left signal lights, and re-coat the air intake, and its a sexy looking, and sounding bike.

I'll get back to you after our trip to Burirum.

Well 100 - 150k dont buy much in the 4 pot world.. Comparing a 750 gixxer to a 250 2 pot ninja ?? But agree, its in real need of a cosmetic respray.. Not that its that expensive..

Mine does also but as it is getting 2x Thai logipost you know they will screw up any new paintwork so am waiting till both shipments are done.

But I still say, pull his arm off at 135 if your not keeping it.

What do you mean by "pull his arm off?" LoL

Just got back from Burirum, no problems, smooth as hel_l, revs right up to 13k with no problems. All the way there and back it was a great ride and I'm sad to sell it.

The guy called me 3 times today because he wants to take it off me now. :P
