:annoyed: A pal of mine has a savings account with a bank whose favourite colour is purple. Well yesterday he tried to make a withdrawal but was told his account had been terminated because he hadn't used it for over a year ! He does have a chance of getting his funds though, but has to provide documents, company papers, copies of meetings all of which have to be sent to head office in Bangkok. What authority do they have to do this and why isn't the account owner notified ? Is this the same for all Thai banks and is it legal ?

I presume you are talking about SCB? If it is, letters were sent out over 2 years ago I think, about monthly charges to dormant accounts & the ultimate closure.Nothing new.

You've got to love banks and they seem to have the same mentality everywhere. As a foreigner, the already pay us no interest, now they want to charge us for the privilege of making them an interest free loan? Incredible Thailand!

I think it's a standard practice indeed. I havent used my Yellow bank account for approx 18 months and i started receiving warning letters a few months ago, asking me to report at the bank to confirm whether i was still living in Thailand or not and if i had any further plans of using the account. As i haven't replied, they charged me 50 THB (which means i have now 11.25 THB left in my bank account) but the account is still opened.

*ankers. Don't you just love the theiving, greedy swine. Same all over the world!:annoyed:

Yes and last month when I wanted to secure my cash from selling some boat items in Pattaya, the BKK Bank wanted to charge me a big surcharge for depositng my funds IN THEIR BANK because my account was based in Koh Samui ! For chrissakes once the funds are deposited in any of their branches they have the right to use them as loans and charge their interest rates !

Strange response. All I am asking is why they do not individually contact the account holders and advise them their account is about to be terminated, a blanket letter to all account holders of what will happen,as you describe is pure arrogance and bad customer service !

Legal just happened to me with an emglish account. they canselled my card just after i paid it off.

the bank in thailand has the authority to cansel a bank account if there is not enough money to pay for the service charges. tax all these little small charges.

they also send u letters also to the addresss that u set up the account. thpough if u do not have a trranslater and if u have not been at that address for a year then u might have had a problem.

i presume there was not much in there. less than 500 baht.

they have done it to me before.

they all do it.

even the bloody english accounts. i just paid off 4800 pounds. so they got allot of interest out of me. then they canselled my card. up to them. i told them. now i cannot borrow anymore and pay back extortion interest rates.

also in the uk. i was in debt to barclay card. i receiveed a large payment from the sell of something and barclay card zapped the money out of my debit account and closed my barclay credit automatically. was me p.......

My friend has a SCB account and received a notification in the mail last year. So, they did notify account holders individually.

My mrs went it to a bank (begins with a K and they like green :) ) last week as she had an old bank book she hadn't used in over ten years! No problem as it had over 1,000 baht in it, she was told. The bank book was so old it didn't fit in the book updating machine so she had no idea what was in it. She was consolidating accounts (from when she lived with her parent's in Bangkok and one at her Grandparents in Lampang with her newer CM account). Her other bank told her that one account (this was a bank that like due and begins with B - fun this eh) had just 700 baht or so in it (charges had whittled it down from 1,200 or so from a few years before) and that she would have lost the account in just under a year - but money could be retrieved with the old bank book.

BTW this is nothing to do with Thai Vs Farang, this is standard practice here - she's Thai and they have no idea she is married to a foreigner either (old accounts were in her maiden name).

Bank accounts will be closed by bans in Europe, same as Thai banks do it in Thailand and yes, I also get interest on my savings account.

The only catch seems to be that if you close down an account you don't get the interest owed to you if you are a foreigner but Thai nationals do get any interest owed to them if they close down their account.

I got my interest when I closed one of the accounts.Depends on which bank I suppose.

Hi Roooo,

That's interesting indeed. The yellow one didn't give me my interest but my wife got the interest on the account in her name.

Many years ago an important banker once told me:

"Banks are legalized Mafia" and he was correct and still is...

If you need 1 Million $'s from the bank THEY tell you what to do and how to act.

But if YOU owe them 100 Million $'s...YOU are the one who tell them what to do.

Never deal with just one bank; spread your assets, also in Thailand, but if you're able to avoid.....don't keep your dosh in LOS.
