H1N1 flu infection rising in Trat

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Trat Provincial Public Health Office has revealed that the type A (H1N1) flu infection is on the rise in the province, especially in educational institutions.

According to MD Krit Palasut of the Trat Provincial Public Health Office, reports from provincial hospitals disclosed that from June 2010, the number of patients infected with the type A (H1N1) flu has increased, especially children. This is attributed to the fact that schools are a crowded place, heightening children’s chance of infection. The doctor also pointed out that the opening of the new semester, paved way for further spread of the disease. He said the best prevention against an outbreak in school was for the infected students to stay home until they fully recovered.

MD Krit urged all schools to implement stringent monitoring of students’ health conditions. If a large number of students are found simultaneously to have flu-like symptoms, they should be separated from others immediately and be sent to the hospital for treatment.

The type A (H1N1) influenza is endemic to pigs. Symptoms include headache, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, loss of appetite, aching, diarrhea, nausea, shortness of breath and cough.
