Living in Paradise - where to holiday?

I'm looking for notes on great vacation areas (in Thailand) Any thoughts to share on this topic would be great, where I'm coming from is that 10-20 years ago, there was probably less tourists around and places like Phuket and Pattaya were sort of 'new' to tourism, Hua Hin, Chang Mai etc were well off the beaten track !

Wheres the current best place either for a relaxing recouperation or for action and adventure . . .

Cheers Hongkonger

My favorite spots are:

- Koh Phangan (not for the full moon party)

Beautiful island! Bit off the beaten trail, but still easy to get to. Has the best of both worlds with loads of activities/restaurants etc.., but also lots of secluded beaches etc..I love just driving around the island all day on a moped!

- Koh Ngai

Really off the beaten trail, tiny island and only a handful of resorts (no nightlife and only a few restaurants) but it's one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and amazing coral reefs just swimming distance right off the beach.

- Koh Chang

Can drive from Bangkok, and it's got lots of restaurants, bars etc and some pretty nice beaches. Will always be one of my core holiday spots.

- Hua Hin

Good for a weekend getaway, i like to pop down there and stay at one of the many nice resorts. But IMHO the beach is pretty crap (literally...horse crap :) )

KOh Kood (Trat) or Chumphon beaches way passed Hua Hin both nice photo attached of Ran ka chio (spelling) island in Chumphon, unspoilt.....so far, just ask a local fisherman to take you there, no tourist boats go there.

1st photo taken off Captain Hook Resort Koh Kood about 3 years ago it was lovely then but now????

definitely pattaya

Just thinking of all the holiday resorts I've been to that put Pattaya to shame for their beaches and scenery...

As I posted in another thread, Whitby is nice, and the beach at Hartlepool is also better than Pattaya. We used to stay in Seton Carew, to get away from it all...

Dungeness has an eeerie and romantic charm, or you could go to Harris for the long sandy beaches and the surf. You'd be better to go in the summer, for the long evenings.

It all depends on what each individual enjoys. Some people love the ocean while others love the mountains and wilderness. And, some folks are only happy with lots of nighlife. There is a bit of everything in Thailand. Along the Burma border from Kanchanaburi to Mae Hong Son is a whole wilderness of clear mountain rivers, spectacular waterfalls, limestone caves and huge reservoirs. Just take a look at some of Kan Win's lovely photos. Kan Win is a tv member who often posts on the photography forum. You can take elephant rides, but personally I enjoy taking a two or three day trip down a clear mountain river with a bit of fishing tossed in for excitement.

head down to koh chang near cambodian border, its only 400 baht on minibus from pattaya , 600 from bangkok, 4-5 hrs drive, lovely beaches, scenery etc, quiet and chilled but many many bars and restraunts if you want nightlife and good food, also into cambodia and down to sihanoukville from koh chANG is an easy and cheap journey. well worth a look

plus koh chang is a lot cheaper than phuket or samui !! beach bungalow on white sands beach mid season for 800 per night with cable tv fridge ,air con

Why not try Koh Samet nice island to relax, recoup or go fishing, snorkelling etc

2 hours drive from Bangkok

Suggest mide September onwards though

cheers Mark

caveat:

avoid bank holidays and weekends on samet like the plague.

its proximity to bangkok has a downside unless you like watching thai teens take pictures of themselves jumping on the beach.
