Belfast man jailed in Thailand for drug dealing

A Belfast man has been convicted of selling drugs in Thailand.

Tommy McAuley, 49, who is originally from the Shankill Road, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was arrested in the resort of Pattaya - 100 miles from Bangkok - in April last year.

Thai Police claimed McAuley sold drugs to teenagers in the resort city. He is appealing his conviction.

The police claimed they had used an informant to buy a quantity of crystal ice from McAuley.

They alleged they found McAuley with 109 grammes of crystal ice in his possession, in two packets, seven tabs of methamphetamine, as well as 11.4 grammes of cannabis, and 12 grammes of opium.

Police claimed he also had a set of scales, and 60 bags for packing the drugs in.

He also had on him 52,000 Thai baht (£1107) as well as the money provided by the informant.

McAuley will be transferred to Bangwang Prison, Bangkok, to serve his sentence.

It is understood an appeal in Thailand can take anything up to five years.

McAuley's family have previously claimed his innocence with regard to the charges.

Isn't BangWang the toughest maximum security prison Thailand? Or is it considered the nicest Thai prison? Why do the farang always seem to get sent there?

Its a good place to go if you want to learn to speak Thai...And by the time the OP gets out think he will be fluent in the local lingo jap.gif

Whatever some may think, the title of this post is incorrect. If Tommy McAuley is from Belfast (and born there) he's a UK citizen from Northern Ireland, not an Irishman.

Apologies if I was mistaken in my terms. :wai:

My British-born grandmother always used to call any man from anywhere in Ireland, an Irishman.

Granted she was born in 1892.

What would be an appropriate term for this millennium that the mods could change it to? (preferably something more precise and palatable than "UK citizen")

confusion

the Republic of Ireland (Irish: Poblacht na hÉireann) is a state which covers approximately five-sixths of the island of Ireland, off the coast of Northwest Europe. It is the western-most state of the European Union. The remaining sixth of the island of Ireland is known as Northern Ireland and is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.as is Belfast

Actually it's transliterated as Bang Kwang prison. It's a maximum-security prison handling criminals with long sentences or death row sentences (irregardless of their nationality).

As an Englishman, l look at any one from across the water as Irish.:)

Some things haven't changed from 1892 I see... :D

He got what he deserved.

I hope you'll get what you deserve. If it's true that he sold ice to teenies, he was really fuc_ked up. But drugs can change people into zombies. Hope it's understood.

Wow. As someone who is largely ignorant about the politics/history of Northern Ireland I am starting to see why the peace process has taken so long.

No mention then of the terrorist Irish Republican Army profiteering from selling drugs, pornograhy, prostitution, extortion, child murders and all the other vile henous crimes they commited in the name of republicanism?

Come on tell the truth, both sides did/still do it.

I am positive there are fugitives from both sides living in Thailand.

bulls**t !! it was loyalists who tried to murder him , i know !! your obviously biased because of some of the people he ran with , yes loyalists, do not forget the i.p.l.o and i.n.l.a were the biggest drug dealers in ulster then and inla and dissident republican child killers still are involved in drug dealing on a massive scale . F.A.R.C does that ring a bell or are you stupid as well as ignorant ? yes tommy was no angel and if he was dealing then rightly so he should take it on the chin, anyone dealing in heroin in my book need to be jailed for a long time but there is just something not right about this case . i wont go into the thai legal system on here , not that i would know anything about it anyway. and your retort about orangemen ? you havent a clue so you,d be as well keeping it buttoned unless you come out with some truth !!bah.gif
