My seven week old daughter has aleady got her UK passport, due my thai wifes extended maternity leave from work we want her to stay with her family over the winter months until April; with me communitng over periodically to spend time there.

We have an interview at the London Thai Embassy in early Oct to get a Thai Birth Certificate and passport for my daughter, I understand there can be quite a delay in getting the passport back (she got her UK one in 5 days).

The question I get conflicting advice on is the status of the child who will be flying out on a 60 day tourist visa using a UK passport, I expect the Thai one to arrive before the end of that period and thus she'll be able to use that to maintain her stay.

Question 1) is there an alternative visa that lasts longer? 2) what would happen to the UK passport, would she have to get it exit stamped as soon as practical to avoid trouble with immigration? 3) would thai authorities be understanding if rules were broken?

Any advice would be welcome.

1. A single entry tourist visa is good for a total of 90 days, 60 days + 30 day extension obtainable from immigration in Thailand for 1900 baht.

2. A double entry tourist visa would be good for 2x(60+30) days with a border crossing necessary to activate the second entry.

3. If she enters Thailand on a UK passport she needs to depart using the same passport.

4. Not a big deal if a child overstays their permission to stay. There will be no fine, but she may get a red overstay stamp in her passport.

She should obtain a free tourist visa in her UK passport on your visit to Embassy if Thai passport can not be obtained prior to travel.

There is no overstay for child so no reason to worry about extension of stay. If wanted a one year extension of stay would likely be provided with copy of birth certificate showing she is Thai but expect immigration would just advise the overstay for child.

While the embassy will always give the worst case scenario, the issuance of Thai passports is actually remarkably efficient (3 days in Thailand). My sister applied for hers through the London embassy and had a new passport in her hands in under 2 weeks. Most of the delay is simply due to postage.

To speed up the process you can always ring the embassy to see if slots have become vacant. They often do.

Also, please note, that if she enters Thailand on a UK Passport, she'll be subject to Thai immigration rules for the duration of her stay. Posting the Thai passport over subsequently will do nothing to extend her stay.

Having said that, as others have mentioned, if she enters on the UK passport, given she is a child there is no overstay fee.
