I Can Use Some Advice On Job Hunting In Bkk :)

Yes - count me in the 'never worked in Thailand, but if I could I'd want to be a low paid teacher' category (jealous of others who are trying to make it subcategory).

You fools.

The thais (and asians in general) are "using" us farangs as long as they need us.

Sooner or later we'll be all kicked out without any gratitude whatsover.

It's always been like that in Asia since the stone age, they "learn the drill"

from us and then they junk us when we're no more needed.

It's farang who invented roads, trains, airplanes, supermarkets, electricity,

radios, tvs, cars, computers ... and yet they treat us like shit because you

know all this stuff is made in china now, and who really need the farangs anymore ?

English teaching will follow the same one day ... philippinos and malays speak

decent english, certainly better than some brazilian or italian (!!) teachers i've met in BKK ....

I have a Thai passport, but I prefer to think of myself as a selective exploiter. Those who suck up to enough, we generally tolerate 55555 (where is Heng when you need a smart alec quip?)

So what competence do you have?

Do you have a job offer? I don't think so :o)

(if you do, you can always send me a PM to discuss things) :)

Erhm...never mind.

Don't ask for advice and then don't supply info so none can be given besides some obvious flames from the usual suspect...or don't complain about it.

I don't think you're willing to help at all. Bashing is what most of you guys are interested in.

And again, my skills are of no importance at all as you're not an employer.

I'm not ONLY focusing on international companies. It's one out of many channels.

Too bad! :D

How do you expect people to help if you don't give any information?

I know a number of employers and recruitment companies (along with my own company), but given your "so special" attitude, I wouldn't recommend you to anyone.

I've hired three TVF members but the OP here would't get an interview and that is the ony certainty I can say about this thread :)

OP, you're taking some serious beating here, but I admire your tenacity (i.e., coming back for more). There's a lot of truth here, although some of the folks on TV tend to be a bit harsh. But the reality is that it will be an uphill battle for you. MNC's rarely hire expats locally when they can hire a Thai for a lot less. And they want those who are familiar with the language and culture. If they need expat help, they will transfer them from the home country. Teaching English is the easiest to find, but the pay sucks. Add to that the fact that Thais are finding out that Filipinos, Indians, etc. can do the job for a lot less. The reputation of some of these farang English teachers hasn't helped. The better teaching gigs (e.g., international schools, universities) require advanced degrees and some credentials. Opening your own business requires big bucks and a lot of local help that you can trust, not to mention lots and lots of time, patience, and top notch management skills.

If you have some marketable trade skills, e.g., IT, musician, chef, etc., you may be able to scratch out a living. Do you have any savings? You'll need it. Thailand is paradise if you have money, but a real tough place if you don't. Networking is important, but if you're just networking with the guys at the bars and taverns….well, that's not going to help you much.

As some others have asked, why have you chosen Thailand? It's not because of some Thai girl you met on the internet, is it? If so, be forewarned. In this country, it's "no money, no h…," well, you know the rest.

I have a crazy idea...........

Find a company in your home country that also has a presence in Thailand.

Get a job with that company in your home country.

Express your interest in being transferred to Thailand when a position here becomes available.

Id say that's how 90% farang get good jobs here in Thailand.;)

That is assuming this "highly specailized skill" that the OP has, is required by his employers, and his employers are a multi-national company with a prescense in Thailand.... and then they would want this individual, with no experience or back ground in Asia studies, culture, economics etc, to come and work in Thailand....

he could just target french and belgian companies and seek job posting where they require

spoken/written french mother tongue.

there's plenty of cases where they need mother tongue translators, QA engineers,

technical writers, and so forth.

the only issue is i don't see much action about this in thailand as IT/ICT companies

are now mostly in china, taiwan, malaysia, singapore.

(who would invest in thailand after all ? even Carrefour is selling out)

my 2 cents ? go in Phuket or Pattaya and find a job as a waiter or barmen

in any farang-run resort or restaurant or gogo-bar, if you're lucky they could even

pay you decently, don't waste your time in BKK, unless you're skilled and you

know what you're doing this city is not farang-friendly.

I am.

Thanks for your advice (I'll ignore the gogo-bar) ;)

I am skilled and it's going to be BKK.

It is definitely possible to find a "normal" job here in Thailand, it requires a bit of hunting though, e.g. through networking events, trade shows, and straightforward door-knocking - i.e. sending your CV around to companies that you see as potential employers, or even getting on the phone and calling them. This is how it more commonly works over here, rather than going to a recruitment agency or similar: although they do also exist and may be useful if these other methods aren't bearing any fruit.

Try browsing around online for recruitment agencies and headhunting agencies also (Google "recruitment company bangkok" and other similar terms), and you could use online networking sites also such as LinkedIn and Ecademy.

This website can be a useful source of info, but only if you ask for specific targetted information. Any question that you post which requires an opinion, e.g. "what are my chances of finding job XYZ" or "what do you think of this offer" will almost certainly be met with a barrage of criticism and negativity, as this seems to be the general atmosphere on this board. This thread itself is a pretty good example of what I mean, and it can be quite disheartening, so it's better to use ThaiVisa when you have a specific question about the legalities of working, or about obtaining work permits, visas, etc.

Hi Dantilley,

Thanks for the information! :)

I understand that this is unfortunately not the right board nor the right question to ask.

People who think different and 'support' me are sending me a PM instead of replying in the topic (probably to avoid ranting).

And yes, this thread is a good example. Maybe the topic title should be changed into

"what newbies on thaivisa should read" or something like that :)

I'm making lists of

- belgian companies in Thailand

- int'l companies in general

- recruitment agencies

I'm convinced that it is possible to find a normal job, even without a degree but with some mysterious skills like mine ;)

I think that if I would ever have a visa question, I would ask it elsewhere and not on this board.

As for me this topic can be closed. The only reason why I still hang around is to answer rare common sense posts like yours.

People who behave like a child and in a mean while think they have to treat me like an 18-year-old nitwit don't deserve my precious time. From now on I will only reply to normal posts and ignore the crap ( = 3/4)

I have degree or years of experience in a field that can help me here in Thailand yet I get by OK. I get the bills paid and to be making good money by the end of the year.

Think outside the box a little and you might find something to suit you, although it seems as though the OP's attitude is a little off.

meaning?

Do a lot of research before you come.

For instance, you could have found out that if you have a visa, you can travel on a single ticket.

Although I'm planning to drop the return flight I didn't want to enter the country on a single ticket.

You may assume that I didn't do much research so far but you're wrong.

I spent about 7 hours a day on research.

I still have other things to do (wether you believe it or not).

And again, I would appreciate some on-topic replies instead of having to reply on out of the blue assumptions of a bored stranger...

A change in your attitude would help you, and given your first message (which could easily be interpreted that you haven't done much research and also interpreted that your making lots of assumptions) I'm not surprised at the replies you've received.

By the way how many times have you visited Thailand before?

If you provide some expanded detail of your actual skills and work experience and your age might well get some focused replies and valuable advice.

[sarcasm]

I'm truly sorry that my patience with the internet warriors here is considered to be a bad attitude and i am delighted that you do take the effort to reply to such an inappropriate first message

[/sarcasm]

talking about (bad) attitudes i witnessed the same in China.

yanks, ozzies, and euros landing right off the boat pretending

to either find quick highly paid jobs or to be the kings of the hill

just because yet another multinational sent them in Beijing for a

few months.

the last straw is the americans trying to teach the chinese

how to make business "the american way", with obvious

disastrous results for both.

and the naive idea of "taking a plane from Belgium and going in BKK to find a job"

is just plain crazy : this guy will learn many lessons the hard way

before going back home empty handed next month.

Miss Fortuna, thanks for your useful contribution.

As I am such a nice person, I will share my defeat right here on this board so you can have a good laugh. Deal? B)

This webboard is very gentle compared to many others where downright very nasty abuse is the norm.

Your own norm is more important than the norm on this webboard.

I've seen enough :D

You could try an international hotel- ie Hilton. They recruit on their website for worldwide positions and being such big hotels they have a wide range of jobs available.

I have often wondered what sort of job I could get in Thailand, but have no desire to work there.

Just on a side note- why Thailand? You are telling us you speak English and French, why not make use of this and go to Cambodia or Vietnam. Your chances would instantly be improved.

Thanks for the input.

I was planning to check the big hotels websites.

The Thai attitude towards farang is nicer than the Vietnamese as the French and the Americans fuc_ked up royally in Vietnam. Vietnamese aren't that keen on westerners who want to settle there.

About Cambodia: it doesn't attract me that much ('on paper').

Which doesn't mean that I can't end up living there after all (who knows).

I want to be in a big international hub as I like cities.

With the arrogance and atitude shown to date, you are certainly going to be a whole bag of fun at an interview.....My advice go and sell timeshare....if you walked into my office with that attitude, would be going out on your ar*se

I just say what I think, just as you do.

I will never have to walk into your office as I will get better than that :D

But hey, as I mentioned before:

keep reading! I might post my defeat after a month in BKK!

if op did research he wouldnt do what he is doing.

he has no special skill. if he did get a job it would pay very little, yadda, yabba, doo..............

- You mean that I should look before I leap and plan this a year in advance?

Fortunately not everyone is alike.

- And yes, I do have a special skill. One where you have never heard of. Wanna bet?

(by the way, I'm not going to Thailand to get rich)

I leave because I'm looking for a different mentality, opposite of yours (if you feel the need to post in a malicious way like you apparently need to do, then i really feel sorry for you).

There are others ways to say that you don't think it's a smart idea to do it the way I do.

Growing up would be better than throwing up in your case (if I may say so).... :)

Dear OP, Your pretty quick to jump all over the replies, but like many others here i'm not surprised at the replies you've received.

Have a look at the way you wrote the title of the thread:

"I Can Use Some Advice On Job Hunting In Bkk"

Perhaps it might have been more productive to write something like:

"Would appreciate some advice......"

I wonder what generation you are from, it's well documented that the younger generations are totally focused on themselves and start your thread with "I" seems to be telling.

True, It should have been 'I could' instead of 'I can'

I wrote it in a hurry.

"Would appreciate some advice...." would have been way too polite for the majority of the people on this board and not understood.

And yes, I started the thread with 'I'

I don't think I need a lesson in politeness from anyone here.

If people posting in this thread are behaving as rude in Thailand as they do here on this board then Thailand is

better of without them. If it comes to politeness in real life, few can beat me.

And what about my age? Based on the assumption that I am from a younger generation indeed, what's your point?

Have I been ranting? Writing disregarding or contemptuous posts out of the blue? Bashing?

The only thing I did was feeding the trolls (stupid indeed).

Reading previous posts has made me loose all respect for most of the people posting in this thread.

If you consider yourself as adults while reacting in such a sad way (and on top of that find it necessary to make comments on MY attitude) you're just a bunch of sick people.

I'm done with it.

Plenty of others topics you can spoil! :)

well seeing that the OP has had enough answers (albeit some good, some not so relevant)

and given this has turned more into personal attacks going both directions, I am closing this.

good luck OP
