Recently bought a new car.

After about a week I got orange" dealer" plates, but no documentation, so I drove the car as little as possible.

After a lot of rhetoric I finally got my temporary "red" plates, but the book that goes with it , is not properly filled out and I have no clue what to enter..

I am not sure if I need a residency statement from immigration or that I can just have it filled out by a local thai person.

The next step will be to request the regular white plates and I haven't been able to find out what is required for that.

I bought my car in "Nong Bua Lam Phu" (close to Udon Thani) because it was the only dealer that could deliver the car within 10 days instead of 10 weeks, but it looks like I am paying the price in another way.

I am considering to request the white plates from Banglamung / Pattaya but I am sure if I can still do that.

Any advice would be greatly aprreciated

Dealer needs to register car in your name within 30 days of delivery. New law, no more 90 days. Or dealer needs to supply you with needed docs for you to register at your local DLT. You need a Certificate of Residence, issued by your local Immigration or your Embassy depending on where you live in LOS.

So chase the dealer or the BiB will have some beer money.

My dealer, l did nothing, they did the lot. :)

plenty beer money. fine is up to 10.000 baht and/or 5 years prison after the 30 day/3.000 km periodB)

Maybe one of the 10 weeks dealers does not know their car is missing yet? you need to chase the dealer but in reverse through the manufacturer/importer quoting chassis No,perhaps your 10 day deal was between salespersons who now need to sort it out. What is the make of car?.

I have no reason to believe everything wasn't above board.

I just don't understand the process, so yes it would be beneficial if the dealer would take care of everything.

So if the dealer would tell me exactly what he needs, then I can provide it for him, now I don't know.

But I am going back to the "NISSAN" dealer again tomorrow, so I'll have to wait and see.

OP you are telling us that a Nissan dealer sold you a car WITHOUT getting the necessary documents from you to register the car. Who did you go with when the car was purchased. Who did your translating or do you speak Thai/dealer speaks English.

So you had a week with no plates, some time with orange (?) plates, and now red plates? From a main dealer? And he hasn't asked you for any documentation to register it yet?

Sounds pretty wierd.

(and my registation took a week short of three months, from Toyota Rayong, finally arriving last week; the registration (tambien rot and tax) was dated two months after we took delivery)

TGF who knows nothing about cars, together with a car expert who knows very little English.

Got a very good deal and very fast delivery.

Didn't want to drive the car to pattaya on dealer plates and no docs, so went back by bus.

Was waiting for the rollover bar to arrive from Bangkok, so didn't want to wait around.

Today I am going back to the dealer and will see what the story is.

I assume that I need proof of residency from the Udon Immigration people, but I haven't been told.

I have been reading about people saying that the dealer took care of everything, so that's what I have been waiting for.

The Nong Bua Lam Phu dealer probably doesn't see too many farangs, so I will give him some slack.

There is something to be said for making all your purchases in the Pattaya area !

I am not saying this to frighten you, but its rather common a farang pay for car and the dealer register in a thais name. I would see the dealer asap, bring a translator and keep GF away

edit If the dealer doesnt have copy of your passport picturepage/visa/permit to stay, and no Certificate of Residence", and these docs are not good for at least 30 days, there is no indication this car will be registered in your name, and then you are not the owner.

Also in my blue book my farang name is written in Thai. Is it my name ? I don't read Thai.

Yes it is in my case cos it's the same as my marriage certificate. Just stuff to be aware of.

When l bought the car they thought it strange I wanted it in my name.

your name in book can be in thai or english, but your passportnumber in book is always in "english" numbers, not thai

We've had red plates 30 days now, been stopped twice by the cops asking about it but we escaped unscathed. Our dealer and finance company reps inform us the car has been registered already, but they are waiting for the plates to be issued by the government department which could yet be another 2 weeks.

As I heard it, you face a fine for merely using red plates for more than 30 days. You seem to say the fine is for not being registered for 30 days. But in our case, we are registered - we just dont have the white plates, yet.

We had probs with bike plates and Honda, took it in our own hands, went to government office concerned and were told regular number plates can be issued in 2 days, and that was from a lady with all the gold braid on her shoulders so god knows why the hang ups.

You didn't say - did she then actually issue your plates in 2 days?

I tell the dealer/finance officer that the cops are hunting us, the govt says it can be done in a week, etc etc. But they just smile and say it doesn't work like that - and actually I believe them. But the local land transport office isn't far from here, and if I feel like a frustrating afternoon I may drop in and ask them.

Wish they would tell you the truth

I have registered brand new car myself twice. The moment you register, book is issued, plates handed over and off you go. 30 minutes after you gave them your docs. Now, if you dont install those plates, vehicle is registered and they can only fine you max 2.000 baht

Its just that dealer must pay to supplier first to get the docs for your car, and before that financecompany must pay to dealer...............................................................B)

Thanks, I have heard the horror stories and made absolutely sure that it was registered in my name.

Although they initially wanted my TGF parents address on the document; go figure !

I just came back from the dealer and finally found out what he wanted.

I handed him the Certificate of Residency from Immigration and he was requesting even more proof.

An English speaking lady from Nissan Leasing finally straighned him out, saying it was a government document and absolute proof.

He now promised the white plates sometime next week but I am not holding my breath....

I also received the insurance papers in my name.

The booklet that comes with the red plates got cleaned up with whitepaper; I assume I have to fill out a page when I am going somewhere, but it is all in Thai, so I will need some help with that from the locals.
