SME Bank to retain interest rate till year-end to ease customers' burden

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The SME Bank confirms to retain loan interest rate for the SME operators until this year-end with the hope to relieve them from financial cost hike.

According to the SME Bank, baht currency appreciation at present has affected many exporters a lot as their cost becomes higher. The Bank thus decides to retain loan interest rate until this year-end, saying the interest rate is at 5% on average in the first year and will be slightly higher by 0.5% each year.

The SME Bank views that the Bank of Thailand should also retain the policy interest rate so as to maintain the value of the baht currency at the current level. Additionally, The Bank deems current inflation rate appropriate for the country’s economic recovery, so reducing consumers’ purchasing needs is another suggested measure to be used.

Private sector seeks to participate in automotive excise tax policy making

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The private sector shows its intention to take part in automotive excise tax policy making with the Government.

The President of Auto Industry of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) Mr Supparat Sirisuwannabgkul stated that the private sector was preparing to hold a discussion with the Industry Minister Chaiwut Bannawat, asking to take part in creating the policy of automotive excise tax.

Moreover, the Government is required to be more careful of information revelation that may have an impact on customers' decision-making in purchasing new cars. Mr Supparat said that the sale rate of automobiles this year was quite high, so the private sector did not want the news on excise tax reduction to affect the sale rate.

During the past eight months, 1.05 million automobiles have been produced so far, an increase by 92% year-on-year. The number of automobiles produced ifor the whole year is expected at 1.6 million units.

In case of eco-car standard and energy saving label to be attached on the eco-car, the private sector asks the Government to expedite the consideration process. Mr Supparat reasoned that several agencies have prepared to issue the label and that might confuse the people.

Prachatai webmaster bailed by relatives in Khon Kaen

By Sompoch Sombat

The Nation on Sunday

Khon Kaen

Chiranuch Premchaiporn, director of independent online newspaper prachatai.com was released on bail yesterday after her relatives posted Bt200,000 bail with Khon Kaen police.

Police said the 43 year-old webmaster was arrested at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Friday after her arrival from Finland, following an arrest warrant from Khon Kaen Provincial Court. She was accused of allowing web content with lese majeste concerns (possibly offensive to the monarchy) and violating the Computer Crimes Act.

Police allege that she did not erase messages with lese majeste content posted by Internet users on the website. The court issued the warrant on September 8 after people there copied the material from the site and gave the copies to police, and told them the website allowed users to post messages with information that may be offensive to the monarchy, which is illegal.

Police later asked the court to issue the arrest warrant.

Chiranuch denied the claim, but said she would only testify in court. So her relatives posted Bt200,000 to get her freed on bail.

Human rights and free speech groups hit out yesterday at the arrest of Chiranuch. Amnesty International, press freedom group Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPF) called on the authorities to immediately drop the charges against her.

Visas for 3,000 Thai Muslims

By The Nation on Sunday

The Saudi Arabian Embassy in Thailand had granted visas to 3,000 Thai Muslims planning to undertake the Hajj religious pilgrimage to Mecca, Culture Minister Nipit Intarasombat said yesterday.

And it would grant a further 2,000 visas tomorrow, Nipit said. He expected all Thai pilgrims would get visas in time.

Nearly 400 Thai Muslims were granted visas in the initial batch, Nipit said last Tuesday.

Previously, there were concerns over the issuing of visas for Thai Muslims wanting to undertake the Hajj because of strained relations due to the promotion of a high-ranking police officer, allegedly involved in the disappearance and murder of a Saudi businessman in 1990.

Some Thai Muslims have had problems finding rental accommodation in Mecca, which has affected the issuing of visas. Nipit said a committee in charge of Hajj religious pilgrimage promotion in Thailand would meet with eight agencies that will take the Muslims to Mecca. The committee would get them to explain the problem on Tuesday. He urged affected pilgrims to file a civil case against the agencies, to demand compensation if the problem meant they were unable to visit Mecca.
