Hello, I hope there is someone that can help me.

I have a B visa extension and a work permit to work at my school. the work pemit was valid until 20th november and the visa till the 17th decmber. I went to do my 90 day report and they didnt give me the 90 days as they will only stamp up until the date of the work permit. Now the term has ended and with a few problems from my school they do not want to renew my contract, however I have found a new job and a friend told me if I dont go back to the same school I have 7 days to do a new visa run after leaving a job as the visa and work permit become invalid.

Is this true? as I didnt know this until today and my new job wont do a visa for me until next month when I start, and I have gone over the seven days.

Can someone please advise me on what I need to do.

Thanks in advance

If you were on a one year "Extension of Stay" based on employment, your permission to stay expires the day you finish your employment. There is not an automatic 7 day grace period, you need to file for an extension or leave the country the day you terminate.

I am married to a Thai and have children here. can I get a visa based on that?

I've never heard of 90 day reporting being tied into anything! Normally they always give the new reporting date 90 days away, even if your extension expires a week later!

No, immigration systems are not yet tied into labor department systems, however, when you would apply for a new work permit/extension they will very likely find out with all problems included!

As you are married, you can get a 60 day extension based on that.

On the last day of your employment you will have to go to immigration with a paper from your employer stating that your employment ends on that day.

Also, bring your marriage certificate with you, along with your wife and all her paperwork (ID, housebook).

I'm not sure for the 60 day extension they will require the update from the local district's office showing that you are still married, maybe others can confirm the exact paperwork needed.

Obviously, being married you can always get a year extension based on being married, but this would need 400,000 Baht in a Thai bank, or 40,000 Baht monthly income.

With this extension you have the added advantage that it will never be tied into any employment, so when you lose your job there will be no visa issues!

Your school must supply you a letter to immigration asking that your extension of stay be canceled on your last day of work. You go to Immigration with that and if you do not want to leave that day extend for 7 days for 1,900 baht.

You can easily obtain a non immigrant O visa for 90 day stay on basis of wife with marriage certificate/copy of her ID card from a Consulate. KL will issue a multi entry valid for a year of 90 day stays if you also show 100k in a bank account. With 400k in bank account you could extend for one year from Immigration. You can also use a tourist visa which is free but for next job/work permit a non immigrant will be required so best to just get the non immigrant O visa now.

Work permits are normally not required to be returned but school will notify authorities. Any stay after last day of work will be overstay at 500 baht per day when found out. Visit Vientiane or other Consulate and get a new visa.
