It is a border fee of $10 or 500 baht and you turn around and return. It is only used for obtaining new visa or visa exempt entry so everyone knows where you are there.

Its not clear if you require a visa or just getting out of LOS for a 90 day report. Its easy from CNX. Mario is right its costs 500baht and there no questions asked by Thai Immigration coming back unless you have overstayed which they will question you about before you leave LOS

LOS mean Land of Smiles (Thailand), with 90 day report he probably means a border run after an entry for 90 days. It does not apply to your situation.

Without a visa you might have a problem getting on board the airline. If you don't have a visa, immigration want you to have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days. In practise immirgation leaves it up to the airline to check if you have a visa and very rearly checks it themselves. Some ailines check very strictly and will deny you boarding, others don't check.

Better get a tourist visa from a Thai consulate, they are free till March 2011 and will give you 60 days, wich you can extend by 30 day for 1,900 baht at immigration in Thailand. With a visa no need for proof of onward travel.
