Do any of you ever think that you may know a TV member in real life? Just coz the way they post or write reminds you of another person you met.

I know many of us would know other members as personal friends but how many of us would pass people everyday or sit next to them in a bar and not realize we have just had a conversation with a famous TV member.

I almost met UG one day, on his bicycle, hard, he did a U turn in front of my truck. He did not even acknowledge my wave.

Posted

They come in my store and ask if I am 'UG" all the time. However, most of them deny that they post when I ask their sign-in name.

One thing I have noticed is that when they do tell me their nick, they are usually someone that I had thought of as a rebellious teenager trying to cause some controversy, but they are usually slightly older than that.

I probably thought that you were giving me the finger. :D

I watched this big guy wearing a gecko books T shirt with a walking stick come to eat daily in a bakery in Luang Prabang last year. I've got no idea who he was.

I saw a big unhappy guy once as well and didn't know who he was. I will call out Farma next time!

I was tempted to call out UG but wasn't sure.

As for others I've caught up with some long lost friends on the forum from reading their posts. We now meet up when we can.

I never wear a Gecko Books T-shirt. I don't use a walking stick. I have not been to Luang Prabang for many years. :)

Very interesting subject OP.

To expand a little (and no doubt going off topic) I often wonder if there are friends/ co-workers that we knew in our past life that for whatever reason we lose track of and that they too may be retired in Thailand somewhere.

When I retired and left the states, I wasn’t sure how long I would stay here and really didn’t tell many people besides my family and a couple of close friends that I was moving to Thailand.

I sometimes think back to my high school & college days and all the silly part-time jobs I had when I was a young whipper snapper. So many many people who I remember as friends, but just lose track of them for various reasons.

In the late 60’s and fresh out of high school I worked for a daily newspaper in southern California. There was this older guy who opened the work place at like 2 or 3 in the morning so we could start preparing the newspapers for delivery. Nice enough guy but there was something about him that I could never quite figure out. Just a strange but pleasant guy.

I remember he smoked Tareyton cigarettes.

About a month or so ago I saw his name and photo on Interpol’s most wanted list. I think he is wanted for embezzlement. Funny that.

Back on topic.

So how can we say hello to various posters who we see shopping at Big C or at the car wash?

Maybe someone could put together a decent quality Tee Shirt with the TV logo on it?

We wouldn’t have to reveal our nicks but at least could say hello.

One can never have enough friends you know.

edit: tried to make a link for Tareyton cigarettes...but failed

I know a few people through the way they post. Still not sure why we hide behind strange names and pictures, unless people are happier not being themselves

Would you wanna meet many people from this forum ? blink.gif

Sure. I already know a bunch of the Chiang Mai crowd. They're all good people.

Onnut,

Are you a big, bald guy?

I'm 6.4 and weigh 115kg, but have a full head of hair even if I do cut it short.

Met several nice blokes once a few years back at the Thai food festival in London: Rinrada, Wolf, BangkokButcher, circa 2005. Also met a few at the one Anglo-Thai Foundation festival in Sussex circa 2004, but don't recall any nicknames. Of course, I met the very friendly and outgoing Mark and his missus Aom at Bedrock Guest House during this year's Ban Phe/Koh Samet vacation. RamdomChances and his missus came up from Tak Fa to my "kheun bahn mai" house warming party several years ago. And on my very first trip to Thailand and Phetchabun, I met crusty old Kevin who I think is a long since banned member. I'm hoping to make a Thai Visa party one of these days, and also meet up with several members who are local to Phetchabun province.

I tend to work very early in the morning and in the evening during low season (now). I am around a lot more during high season (if there is one). :ermm:

I'm pretty sure that's not the case for the majority on here. I'll never reveal my true identity on an internet forum. I aren't that trusting. A friend of mine was very public about who he was on another non-Thai related forum. He got into an online spat with a guy who through the forum knew where he worked. The guy phoned my friend's boss up and told him my friend was a nonce.

To be honest mate if I saw a western guy walk into a pub and scream something out loud I'd try to avoid eye contact and hope he he had enough meds to last. :D

Back in the good old days,we had a reliable way of identifying people.

Due to some of the statements I have made, I do not think it would be wise if my identity was confirmed, particularly by someone in an official position.
