Driving To Singapore From Los

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of driving to Singapore from Chiang Mai for fun

take in all the beaches take about 10 days should be around 2800km? i figure 11,000baht in diesel driving a new Fortuner-lousy gas mileage!

Anyone done it?

Ive read that its easy driving through malaysia?

any input?

Not done it but would love too. I've seen thai plates on Singapore roads so I guess it shouldn't be a problem getting your car in. Let us know how the trip goes.

Once in a while I drive from Bangkok to Phuket, which is ok in daytime with nice scenery especially south of Ranong. Would not drive at night time, as too many people, animals crossing the road.

Also went a couple of time from Penang to Port Klang or KL. Nice drive and very well maintained highways.

You might want to check that your insurance covers Malaysia and Singapore. You may get knocked back at the border if you dont have cover for Malaysia.

How do you go about getting the "passport" for the car.

Also if the thing is financed, will that affect getting the passport to leave the country ?

yes, it's quite easy driving through malaysia. although the scenery is jus oil palm or rubber plantations.

You can buy insurance at the border, minimum period one month cover

If the car is not registered in your name then you must have written permission and signed copy of owners ID.

Paperwork takes about ten minutes if there is no queue

Does any documentation need to be translated into English before you travel?

I know that a normal Thai drivers license is acceptable in both Malaysia and Singapore, but am not sure if any of the Thai related registration papers need to be translated.

Before you go consider this.

You have a D4D engine which is sensitive to fuel quality.

Thai diesel has a sulphur content of 500ppm

Malaysia diesel is 3000ppm

Europe will soon be 10ppm

You must get to local motor department and get the paper for leaving the country , another important thing is that on this paper they write the plate with latin letters, and you will have to put stickers with the latin letters plate near the thai plate.

At the border get the malaysian insurance (I don't know if covers also Singapore). Another notable thing is that to drive in central Singapore you should pay a tax , something like London's congestion charge.

See this link , it tells the trip of a guy from Singapore to Laos, but there are also interesting info (don't know if outdated) for crossing borders.

From what I recollect, Singapore levies a daily charge for having a foreign-registered vehicle in the country (although there are circumstances under which this might be waived). On top of that, most Singapore cars have a cash card reader on the dashboard for use with the ERP scheme (Electronic Road Pricing). Seems to me that there are places where one can rent the card readers along Woodlands Road just after one crosses the border at Woodlands. You might be able to answer some questions about driving in Singapore by consulting the Land Transport Authority.

Got my Fortuner 3.0 Diesel today. Geuss you should get 12 Km/Litre since its mostly highway driving.

2800/Km divided by 12 Km/Litre = 240 litres

240 litres X 25 baht/liter = 6000 baht.

(Is 2800 Km one way or round trip estimate?).

Is it your own car?

Most of the rent-a-car companies would say in the contract that the vehicle will not be taken out of the Kingdom.

For what it is worth:

1. ERP (Electronic Road Pricing) machine is only required if you go on certain expressways at peak hours or enter the CBD at peak hours - but it is also increasingly useful as many car parks use it for automatic charging. The gadgets can be rented once you have entered Singapore.

2. Singapore to KL is about a 4 hour drive on a decent expressway with service stations / restaurants etc. As a previous post said, not much to see except oil palm plantations. Watch for radar speed traps...

3. I'm sure there was a number 3 ....

Would be interested to hear how it goes, I am planning to ride my motorbike from Singapore to Ubon soon.
