US Cellular unveils next Android-powered smartphone, the Samsung Mesmerize

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (BNO NEWS) – U.S. Cellular on Wednesday announced its next Android-powered smartphone, the Samsung Mesmerize (SCH-i500) which is expected be on stores on October 27.

"Customers told us they want access to the newest phones and the Samsung Mesmerize is an impressive Android-powered device for people who want to stay connected to work, entertainment and the people who matter most to them," said Edward Perez, U.S. Cellular vice president of marketing and sales operations.

The Samsung Mesmerize is part of Samsung's line of Galaxy STM smartphones and the third of five that U.S. Cellular is launching this year on the Android platform. The Chicago-based company will unveil the LG Apex in November and the LG Optimus in December.

U.S. Cellular's Android-powered phones are part of the company's strategy to deliver cutting-edge devices to elevate the customer experience. To enhance this, U.S. Cellular launched recently its series of industry-first, customer-focused initiatives called The Belief Project.

The Belief Project was developed to fix the frustrations that wireless customers have with their carries with innovations like "One and Done" contracts, a robust rewards program, simplified national rate plans and the industry's only phone replacement program.

"Our new Belief Plans are value-packed for customers who talk, text and need frequent access to data, and all of our phones are backed by our nationwide 3G network," Perez added.

The Samsung Mesmerize features a 4-inch super-AMOLED touchscreen, a 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird Application processor, a virtual QWERTY keyboard with Swype technology, a 5 megapixel camera that records video in HD, MP3 player, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and expandable memory up to 32GB.

The Mesmerize operate on the Android 2.1 platform that provides access to the 80,000 applications available on the Android Market which includes Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Talk and YouTube. Later this year, users would be able to upgrade their software to Android 2.2 platform.
