Mobile Phone & Internet Reception In Golden Triangle

Recommended Posts

I'm posting this in the General forum, since it's both about travelling in Thailand and mobile/internet.

I have never been to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand/Laos/Myanmar borders meet. I understand that the nearest village to this border area on the Thai side is Sob Ruak.

Does anyone know if it is possible in that village to receive any of the Thai mobile networks on a cellphone (I assume so). Can any of the Lao mobile networks from across the Mekong also be received, (assuming you have a Lao SIM card?). Finally, is it possible to receive the Myanmar mobile network (also just a few hundred meters away if they have a cell tower?).

Is landline/ADSL internet available in that village (in a house/hotel/office)?

I just want to get some information prior to making the journey to that region to check out a few ideas.

Thanks

Simon

I spent a couple of nights in Sop Ruak last December. The Thai mobile networks have good service there, and my phone was picking up signals from the Lao side also. Didn't get anything from Myanmar. No problem with net access at cafe's and hotels. I used Edge with my phone which also worked well.
