There are no government redundancy schemes for pimps and mamma sans. Makes much more sense to contain these women of ill virtue into bars where the people who run these establishments have complete control over them, the customers and ensure themselves a share of the profits. Similar has already happened in Chiang Mai, where the lady houses have all been shut down and levelled, the pros contained in the bars under full control of the system created by the old boys networks that run the city. They are generally an unappealing sight that does no good for Pattaya's image and many are aggressive and rude too, not to mention the pick pockets. Everyone knows Pattaya is the cesspool of Thailand that attracts the worst types of farang and Thai If people are not interested in the sex for sale image of Pattaya they would visit many of the beautiful areas of Thailand People who go to Pattaya do not go for the dirty beaches there they go for the dirty women and ladyboys Don't forget the dirty men. Would not want to leave out our gay brothers. Most gay guys don't like lady boys, you know. Hetrosexual guys don't like them either so who does that leave. For a foreign family whose travel agent gets them a Pattaya Beach hotel, is seems rather far-fetched to tell them to get in a baht bus and go to Jomtien just to have an evening walk on the beach. I am a personal liberty-type person, so I don't mind there being hookers plying their trade. I just think the Beach Road is too valuable a piece of real estate. In a beach town, many people come for the beach, and the large number of male and female hookers doing their thing there is threatening to some tourists. Hookers don't ply their trade inside of wats, yet they seem to find customers. WHy not make the beach a no hooker zone? Pick any one of the sois or the parallel road going north and let the hookers know they won't be hassled there. Don't you think the johns would be able to walk the few minutes it takes to get there to find a hooker? This is not an anti-hooker post. It is just a keep the beach road user-friendly for everyone. Agreed. It would be so easy to setup a separate area and clean up beach road. There are a lot of families here. And more would like to come. Lots of Thais visit the beach. Pattaya would improve immensely if they got their act together regarding the beach walk. If they did it right, business could increase here dramatically. But still maintain the current activities for those interested. Vegas had the same problem in the 70's. Hookers would walk down the strip and literally reach into your car and grab you by the short ones. Fun the first time, not so fun the 10th. Then robberies started, etc., to they cracked down on them. Everybody said Vegas would lose visitors as that was part of the attraction. Well...guess what...Vegas grew like crazy after the crackdown and has become a truly world class destination. Hookers are everywhere, but they are not walking the streets. Works out great. You can say the same thing about New York City. 8th Avenue. On my first trip, that street was a cesspool. Live sex act, porn shops, crime...it really sucked. Mayor Giuliani cracked down on it, dealing with complaints from many groups, and now crime is down a huge % and tourism is thriving. Hard to argue with success.... [As in business, play to strengths - keep Pattaya wild and dirty and develop Jomtien for families. In Thailand, there are thousands of spots with much more beautiful beaches (though their number shrink by the day out of growing pollution and a lack of eco-policy and longterm perspective in Thailand) and more value in terms of 'family friendliness'. Pattaya is clearly an 'entertainment' (not even only related to sex tourism) destination, and is reknowned in the world for that. I'm sure that 95% of the tourists coming there know that very well and EXPECT it to be that way. Apart from that, with the current crime rate, unresolved farang killings (eeeh.. 'suicides'), bribery, potholes, polluted air, tap water and sea, polluted beaches, extortion by police against naive tourists, SME blackmailing etc. etc. etc., Pattaya will never be a 'nice' and modern city. The best joke was when I heard they seriously apply as a location for the next world exhibition! I'd recommend the authorities to FIRST clean up all the other mess that exists in Pattaya, and as soon as everthing else is nice, clean, modern and friendly, ask the girls if they would move to another spot. I sure didn't on my first trip....though I had read enough about it, and lived in Bangkok...but still was shocked when I got here. As for the crime rate, read the thread on Phuket...or CM. Same stuff happens there. Just read about a guy doing a high dive off a balcony in CM. And all the other crime occurs in those cities as well. Pattaya is kinda like the US...easy target right now... Why is everyone making a fuss about a crackdown? They're always having crackdowns and nothing changes. Unless they police the area year round, day and night, they're not really serious about cleaning it up. There's something very wrong about detaining girls on suspicion of being a sex workers. It just shows you that people don't have rights here and the police can get away with anything at all. To be fair they would need hard evidence. During these crackdowns, any Asian looking female cannot enjoy sitting along the beachfront for fear of being suspected of being a prostitute by the crackdown police. I've left my wife sitting there on the odd occasion while I pop over the road to get some refreshments. I wouldn't be very happy if they arrested her while I was away because she was just sitting there on the beachfront, as people do. That's a crackdown I'd like to see. The girls on Beach Road are a major attraction of Pattaya Beach. Leave them alone. The Ladyboys, on the other hand, are a nuisance as they are way too aggressive. Get rid of the Ladyboys. Tho I don't habitate Pattaya, I've had some fun there with the ladies for hire. Fully agree with Sailfish1 about getting rid of the ladyboys.
