TIJUANA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Authorities on Monday seized a cargo of marijuana of approximately 100 tons in Tijuana, northern Mexico, local media reported.

In an operation executed during the early hours of Monday, federal and local law enforcement agents arrested seven individuals and searched six trucks in the Alamar neighborhood in Tijuana, a city which borders with San Diego.

The narcotics were linked to the Arellano Felix drug cartel and authorities said that this was one of the biggest marijuana confiscations in recent years.

The group of criminals was driving through the streets of Tijuana on early Monday when local law enforcement noticed them.

After being discovered, the drug traffickers opened fire at the police officers who returned the hostilities. The gunfire exchange left one police officer hurt.

The large amount of marijuana was transported to the Second Military Zone of Baja California, where army men are currently weighing the amount of narcotics seized.
