Microsoft's chief software architect Ray Ozzie steps down

REDMOND, WASHINGTON (BNO NEWS) -- Microsoft on Monday announced that its chief software architect Ray Ozzie stepped down from his role after five years in the organization.

The announcement was made by Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's chief executive officer (CEO). Ballmer spread the news in an email he sent to his employees, noting the significant contributions made by Ozzie to the company as well as the progress made thanks to them.

Ozzie will continue to work for the company for a natural transition time before retiring from Microsoft. During this time he will help transitioning the teams and ongoing strategic projects within the organization.

Ballmer remarked that no one will fill in the position left by Ozzie. He explained that the chief software architect role was solely created for Ozzie. Instead, Microsoft's CEO said that the responsibilities will be divided among Microsoft's strong planning process and strong technical leaders in each business group.

Ozzie will now focus his efforts in the broader area of entertainment where Microsoft has many ongoing investments. Beyond that, the former chief software architect has no further plans at the moment.

He began as a Microsoft ISV and through inspiration and impact has contributed to the Microsoft's transition toward a software world now centered on services. Ozzie also contributed by conceiving, incubating and shepherding Windows Azure, a rich platform foundation that will be sued for years to come.

"I’d like to thank him today for his contributions to Microsoft, both as a leader and as a long-time Microsoft ISV. Ray contributed significantly to the early success of Windows. He’s always been a ‘maker’ and a partner, and we look forward to our continuing collaboration as his future unfolds. Ray has played a critical role in helping us to assume the leadership position in the cloud, and positioned us well for future success," Ballmer concluded.
