The most you can expect is 7 days. A flight ticket leaving within those 7 days will probably be needed.

Cross the border and return for 15 days. Visit the Thai Consulate in Vientienne and apply for a Visa 60 days.

it looks as if you have a visa exempt stamp, so the only thing immigration will give you is a 7 day for 1900 baht. if your in Udon why don't you go into Lao and Vientien and get double entry tourist visa (60/30 x 2 = 180). They are free.

Even if you enter Laos for a few minutes it will still cost you $30 so may as well stay a night in Vientienne and get a new visa.

Gents,

I need to do a visa run for the 1st time tomorrow (from Chaiyaphum) so will drive up to Vientien. I only need a 15 day visa as I'll be heading back to work within that time, so can anyone tell me where's the best place to cross and what the procedure will likely be please.

cheers.

You will just have to cross the border into Laos, pay for the visa for Laos, leave Laos and re-enter Thailand and you will get a permission to stay for 15 days.

Mario,

thank you for the information. The map (Google) showed 2 crossings, one called The Friendship Bridge and another (un-named) a little further west. Which is the better of the two to use, or is there any difference please?

Jdinasia,

thanks for your input. That looks like a consensus of opinion to me so I guess The Friendship Bridge is the one.

It makes a difference if using public transport or own means as from your location in Chaiyaphum the Tha Li crossing in Loei province is also an option.

Ahh....my girlfriends father is going to run me up in his truck, so I wont need to use public transport. I take it the procedure at Leoi province will be the same as stated above?

Perfect. Thanks very much for your help. I'll have a look and see how the road conditions are for each journey (there's a fair bit of flooding around up here too) and take it from there.

cheers...
