If you have a TEFL/TESOL Certificate you should know what to do. Do you have one? :whistling:

This thread is fairly straight forward. The OP is asking for advice on giving a demonstration. Discussions of educational background, visas, nationality, etc. are not going to be very helpful for him next Tuesday.

Let's stay on topic. Your help will be appreciated.

Be prepared to be flexible. :rolleyes: If they tell you that you will be teaching for 20 minutes in front to 25 6th graders, don't be surprised if you end up doing an hour in front of 50 2nd graders.:blink:

You might plan a simple activity that would work with different age levels. Don't try anything too complex, because the students probably won't understand your directions. Teaching them a song might be a good choice. Or you could divide the class into two groups (usually boys & girls) and then have them practice a simple conversation. If you are teaching in a regular Government School, the kids will read better than they can speak or understand spoken English, so you should probably write the song lyrics or the conversation on the board. Whatever you end up doing, be cheerful and energetic and concentrate on pronunciation and vocabulary.

get some flash cards, you tell the students (Panel) what each one is and get them to repeat it, make sure they use the correct pronunciation. Try bogglesworldesl.com for other ideas

Good luck

Most Thai schools want to see similar things; adopt the persona of Mr Bean and you'll be halfway home, but don't attempt to teach if the class are not concentrating - that's a rookie error. What until you've got their attention, but they'll probably be on best behaviour if a member of staff is there observing you so it should be easy.

Your lesson should move from 1) a Warm-up game 2) a Drilling game 3) one or more Practise Games.

You should show and demonstrate instead of talking so much and motion for the class to form a circle or two teams for each of the games.

The specific games depend on size and age of class, but you should try to teach through movement games, so you could give a ball, squeaky bat, hammer to each team and they score points for the first to run and hit/touch whatever nouns you say (drawn on board or cards). Keeping points keeps the motivation high and helps manage behavior.

A run and hit type game would be a good warm-up to set the tone for the lesson.

Following that would be structured practice called 'drilling' where the students practice saying the nouns, maybe in a sentence, either following after you, or individually in teams. Again a relay race, or circle race would be fine.

Practise games require more setting up but Thai kids love the Paper, scissor, rock game which they could play in pairs to decide who says the noun, for example. A great game you can use with a whole class is teach an action for each of four nouns, ex Hat, touch the head, Shoes, touch the toes, Bat, swing a bat, Heart, touch their heart. You say, they repeat and do the action. Then in pairs, they play Paper, Scissors, Rock. The loser goes behind the winner and then you repeat the nouns with actions. You repeat this so you've got lines of kids forming and the kids at the front playing the game. Finally you'll have two long lines and one winner, it may not be possible depending on number of kids and size of classroom.

Another team game would be they take turns to touch the board and spell a noun, one letter each - quickest team is the winner - that could go on for 30 minutes. If you're up for it, they'll love an auction where you give each team fictional money on the board and they bid for various items (nouns) worth various points, to find a winning team.

The main thing is to help the kids speak English, so don't fall into the trap of giving worksheets.

Thanks Y'all for the pointers. pls I'd like suggestions on songs that are good for teaching Noun, even though I'm not good at singing.

Who's Noun?

Anyways, if you have a demonstration for teaching primary school, you might want to think about the next two songs:

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes

and eyes and ears and mouth and nose,

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes

or

You put your right foot in,

You put your right foot out;

You put your right foot in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your left foot in,

You put your left foot out;

You put your left foot in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your right hand in,

You put your right hand out;

You put your right hand in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your left hand in,

You put your left hand out;

You put your left hand in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your right side in,

You put your right side out;

You put your right side in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your left side in,

You put your left side out;

You put your left side in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your nose in,

You put your nose out;

You put your nose in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your backside in,

You put your backside out;

You put your backside in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your head in,

You put your head out;

You put your head in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about!

You put your whole self in,

You put your whole self out;

You put your whole self in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the Hokey-Pokey,

And you turn yourself around.

That's what it's all about

Google around for some youtube videos of these songs.

If it's about teaching secondary school or adults, don't use songs. :lol:
