Ban visits Bangkok to strengthen UN-Thai ties

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will pay a working visit to Thailand on 26 October 2010, as guest of the Thai government, ahead of his trip to the Asean Summit in Hanoi.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva invited Ban to visit Thailand when they met in New York recently. The Foreign Ministry said that the visit will provide a good opportunity to familiarize himself with the constructive role of Thailand in the region, as well as an opportunity for both sides to discuss issues of common interest.

Ban is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Abhisit at the Government House on Tuesday, followed by the luncheon hosted by the prime minister. There will be a joint press conference.

In a separate program for his wife, Mrs. Ban Soontaek, will meet with Mrs. Pimpen Vejjajiva at the Government House.

Following the luncheon, she will visit the Arts of the Kingdom 5th Exhibition at Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and the Enhancing Lives of Female Inmates (ELFI) Project at Central Women Correctional Institution in Bangkok.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations will have a meeting with UN team at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and will leave Thailand in the evening for Cambodia before proceeding to attend the 3rd ASEAN-UN Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

With a full agenda and limited time I hope they schedule 10 minutes for the UDD (or PTP?) to hand over a nice letter and some video clips on the wonderful tourist attractions in Thailand. Sure to include some 'atrocities committed by army / government' as some claim. How come I doubt the 'bonfire' on the 19th of May will be included, or the ugliness of the red wall of burning tyres.
