Iran says UN resolution proves US sanctions against Cuba are illegal

2010-10-29 14:10:10 GMT+7 (ICT)

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- Iran has said that a recent United Nations General Assembly resolution on the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba shows that these sanctions have been illegally imposed, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The remarks were made by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast and congratulated the Cuban nation and government on the approval of the resolution.

"This is the 19th year in a row that such resolutions are being passed against the unilaterally imposed US sanctions against Cuba, which means the international community is seriously opposed to the illegitimate sanctions against nations and aware of their anti-human rights nature," Mehman-Parast said.

The UN General Assembly resolution urged the U.S. on Tuesday to remove the decades-old economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed on the Caribbean island nation. The resolution received 187 votes in favor to 2 against from the United States and Israel.

Mehman-Parast said that the UN resolution exemplifies that the U.S. and its allies are in direct opposition to the will of other nations.

"The UN Secretary General is expected to heed the often repeated expectation of the international community in two decades on illegal nature of imposing unilateral sanctions against nations seriously and to present his effective report on the need to ban such inhumane moves against world nations," the spokesman added.

The embargo prohibits American entrepreneurs and companies from engaging in business with Cuban interests. It is the most enduring trade embargo in modern history. President Obama renewed the embargo last September 2, saying the renewal was the best for the country.

Last Friday, Russia urged the United States to end the embargo on Cuba and called for the United Nations to support the pledge. The Russian Parliament remarked that the U.S. continues to break norms and principles of relations among sovereign states.
