Does anyone know where I can buy a VHS video cassette recorder in Bangkok?

Does anyone know where I can muy a cheap multimeter in Bangkok (after I made the mistake of trying to measure 250V AC on the 250mV DC range)?

Related to the second question, does anyone know where I can buy a British style plug fuse, 5A. HomePro have some which are similar but longer. The fuse is in the plug of my PC power supply that I purchased here in Bangkok, so you might expect to be able to buy replacements, but TIT...

Thank you.

You can buy a usable multimeter in any Lotus among the hanging tools. Believe some of the department type stores (maybe Powerbuy) still sell VHS recorders but digital is the playing field these days.

For just about anything electronic/parts and such walk one block directly west from the Old Siam shopping center in Chinatown.

Thanks for that Lopburi3. I will head over to Chinatown tomorrow via Lotus.

If you want a half decent multimeter try the top floor of Fortune Town or if you want to run to Fluke or the like ground floor of Zeer Rangsit (under the Asia Airport hotel).

The cheapies from Tesco etc, are perfectly usable for home and car stuff.

If you go to Zeer Rangsit then go to NPE.

Go to level 2 (ground floor for Aussies or Brits) and walk on the left side to the far end you will see a sign for NPE, just pass famous Computer. It's a large electronic supermarket which seems to have just about everything electrical you could possibly want.

The other place worth a look that has some really good bargains is in the basement, opposite the food court at the rear of the building. Look for a blue Daewoo sign at the shop entrance, beside the escalator. It can get a bit crowded but they're doing the place up so as it's not as chaotic as it used to be.

Not many VHS recorders on sale in Bangkok but l have seen a couple of models at Central, Sony and LG l think.

NPE was the place I was thinking of, just went blank (getting old).

The place in the basement is interesting, got a Nokia car charger for 40Baht.. all sorts of interesting things.

It's a few kms. going away from Bangkok on the same road that runs out front of the airport. Bus #539 from Victory Monument passes by there.

If you do a search for Asia Airport Hotel you will see exactly where it is. It's opposite a Carrefour store and is the biggest IT centre l've seen in Bangkok. It doesn't have all the dodgy guys trying to sell you pirated dvd's which may or may not be a good thing. :o

Not many westerners go there so you won't find as many sales staff that speak English as you would at Pantip but worth a look if you want something a bit different to Pantip. If you go there with a Thai lady then they will probably like the market and clothing mall out the front called Bobae (single storey white building), some great bargains in there according to my wife and her friends.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

I found everything I needed on the top floor of Fortune IT Mall. The Tesco Lotus there didn't have any multimeters among the hanging tools (gallows, rope, etc ?), but the big shop on the long passage towards the back that has a repair counter had a huge range. The Lotus has a really good range of hardware and not too expensive and I found several other things there that I have been looking for. The big shop also had the right sized fuses, although the nearest I could get was 6A instead of 5A.

The Sinsiam Electronics shop suggested by Crossy does have several VCRs on its website, but I have changed my plan. The broken VCR belongs to a friend of mine, so I am going to attempt to use my VCR and computer to copy her videos onto VCDs and she will then buy a VCD / DVD player which is more useful these days as Lopburi said. I think this is possible, but I haven't actually done it yet, so I may still end up buying a VCR!

I'm definitely going to have a trip out to Zeer Rangsit next time I need something, it will save me having a T-shirt printed with "Mai Aw Sexyyy Moviee".

Thanks again.

I dumped my VCR's about 3 years ago in favour of the Pioneer DVR-720H.

The best purchase I ever made. :o

Tapes I wanted to keep I copied to DVD using the old VCRs
