UN Secretary-General congratulates Kyrgyzstan after successful parliamentary elections

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday congratulated the people and government of Kyrgyzstan after their successful parliamentary elections on October 10.

On Monday, the results of Kyrgyzstan's parliamentary elections were released and were assessed by observers as positive, transparent, and well organized. Ban encouraged the Kyrgyz government to create an inclusive government that will ensure peace, stability and prosperity, his spokesperson, Martin Nesirky said.

The polls were held approximately four months after the deadly clashes between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks last June. The deadly confrontations affected nearly half a million people, displacing about 400,000 and many more fled to Uzbekistan.

Following the clashes, Secretary-General Ban assured Kyrgyzstan President Rosa Otunbayeva the continued UN support for the Central Asian nation's rehabilitation, recovery and reconciliation.

Many factions feared that the elections may be targeted by some rebel groups to attack the government. However, no incidents were recorded as many international organizations voiced the importance of a peaceful election process.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) called on Thursday on all parliamentary political parties to maintain dialog on issues of national importance despite the outcome of the election.
