Do any of the hospitals offer first aid courses? I would like our nanny to have some first aid training for the basics such as drowning, choking, accidents etc.

Search St John's Ambulance, they used to do first aid courses in Rayong, not sure it still doing it, failing that any company such as MOGIT, or any offshore training school do First aid Courses, it would suit what you are looking for nomally a 1 day course

I'll keep looking

kurnell, i have to say, thai or not thai, a large amount of people that do first aid courses, when the real happening happens, they dont know what to do... better that they learn to call someone for help... in all our childrens' houses all the caretakers including the 14 yr olds that work their four weekly hours have to do a course specially geared for first aid for children (i.e first aid to be applied to children and infants). they also go through a yearly refresher course.

but unless the caretaker is level headed, and has actually dealth with emergency situations, usually they forget what they have to do. i almost choked to death on a piece of meat, my 16 yr old , who works with children, has done her certificate several times and is usually level headed, lost her concentration, and handed me the phone which she dialled to the emergency number, and i couldnt speak since i was choking!> all s well, as i more or less rescued my self (i am not a panicker), but it was hysterically funny but also very stupid situation. my husband tried jamming his hands down my throat (bad), or patting me on the back (bad), i did the self heimlach more or less....

working in amusement park petting zoo with animals and children and now in the hotel, ive dealt with many many situations and i can say that most people even if they have done courses, tend to react with panic and not as they've been taught, unless they have had hands on experience.

easier to teach what NOT TO DO. (leave child alone, no small things laying around, dont leave child on chair or anywhere else high up, dont leave alone in bath... ) anything else, run with child get help. uless the caretaker is level headed or is good at these things. usually they just mess up. or run to get help leaving the child alone.

choking btw, seems to be the scenario where most people dont know what to do, even if they've been in courses. here the courses are three days for a nanny/caretaker. two days of hands on (baby dolls, that sort of thing), one day of talk.

good luck either way.

Certainly from my knowledge Bangkok Hospital group offers First Aid and BLS training for companies, and I assume that they may aslo run courses for the members of public. It would probably be worth dropping an e-mail to someone in the international department who should be able to put you in touch with right person.
