Where To Walk The Dog?

Recommended Posts

Does any of you know some good places to walk the dog in Phuket? Of course there's all the different beaches. There's also the King Rama IX Park in Phuket Town, but dogs are not allowed in some parts of the park, and there's quite a bit of stray dogs also. So, is there anywhere else?

I would also be very interested in getting in contact with dobermann owners in Phuket.

i have trained my male and neutered dog to walk with me on a leash

he has been attacked 3 times while just walking on the side walk by stray dogs or dogs that have staked out their territories

one attack was quite viscious when he was bitten on the leg by a territorial dog

and this happened at an outdoor restaurant while we were eating and my dog was with me

its dangerous out there because of all the street dogs that either have no owners or stray dogs that have staked out their territiory

ive found the beach early in the morning or late in the afternoon r the best places

there i can let him off his leash and let him run and play and dig in the sand

at first i had trouble with stray dogs on the beach who tried to attack him

but i carry a club and when they come near i throw it at them

after a few weeks of this i have had no problem with other dogs

good luck in finding a place that is suitable both for you and your dog

Dogs aren't allowed on beaches here.

You all know the reasons why, but since it's not policed, then you all will still go ahead and take your muts on the sand.

I'm sick of stepping in, or having to avoid, dog pooh, and also cleaning my daughters feet and hands when she's crying 'cos she has sand-covered <deleted> on her.

It's not right, and you all know it. Probably there are rules in your home country that you'd respect, but here you don't give a toss.

At least, please, take some plastic bags and clean up after your dog.

I think this would be more correct:

Which ones are they, then?

nai harn, due to the strong muslim influence in tessabaan. still diffcult to keep the street dogs off the beach though

here in kata beach, most street dogs sleep on the beach when they are not hunting for food. figure where the phoo comes from, 100 street dogs or 20 owned dogs?

I have been picking up my dogs phoo with a plastic bag past 4 decades, but in as long as its not accepted to throw the plasticbag in a trash bin along the beach, I dont bother any more

and yes there are rules in my homecountry, street dogs are beeing pickud up, and killed if not claimed within 72 hours. phoo is being picked up and thrown in any trash bin, and dogs can walk safely in a leash. But we live here now, and follow the rules and culture here.

I must say, I agree with you, the dogs can be a pain.

At Rawai beach they are allowed, afaik only at Nai Harn dogs are not allowed. But maybe somebody else has complete information on this?

Also, at Nai Harn dogs may be not allowed, but with the strays in the area, there will always be dogs on the beach anyway.

Nice that we agree on something, stevenl!!

If the country accepts stray dogs as part of life, then there's nothing we can do about strays. However, I don't see how that affects dog owners letting their own animals pooh in public play areas, such as beaches, without having the care and personal morals to clean up after them.

If you think leaving a pile of pooh is 'cool and alright', then I hope your kids / grandkids, get a dose of covering one day. See how they and you feel then.

Where did the 'no dogs on beaches' law originate from, or is that just wishful thinking? I walk my dogs on beaches virtually every day, driving 15 to 20 minutes from my home to get them there. No way would I take them to the primary beaches such as Kata, Karon, Nai Harn etc. Apart from the people, these places are inundated with beach side restaurants/stalls, and home to countless strays who object to any other dog infringing on 'their' area. Mine go to Ao Yon or Kao Khad. Nice long beaches, Muslim area so rarely see another dog, and nearly always deserted.

There is no law in Thailand prohibiting dogs on any beach in Thailand. All beaches are public here

Some Tessabaan have put up signs to not allow dogs for perhaps as many as 10 beaches in this country, but do not try to enforce it

The phoo from dogs are gone within next high tide, while the plastic and glass from humans unfortunately remains

Well, it gives dogowners an excuse. See the post from Pagallim just before this one. He is obviously ignoring the rules on Nai Harn Beach, but claims it does not matter because there are others doing the same and strays as well.

Or seen the comment from KBB, who doesn't care that people step in his dog's poop before the next high tide, and does not care that not all poop gets washed away, so people will be stepping in his god's poop.

Yes sure, we make mess, but that is no excuse to make even more mess.

PS: just realised I read Pagallim's post completely wrong, my excuses.

If I am with a purveyor of all that is good in this world and he chooses to relieve himself. I most definitely pick up dog poop when in a beach area or on a puublic walkway. I secretly toss it one of the few trash piles along the beach in Patong. (This can only be done very early or late in the day in Patong.) Apparently, this is also frowned upon, although tossing empty styrofoam containers, McDonalds wrappers, batteries and plastic bags on the beach is ok. Somehow, dog poop disposal is considered unacceptable compared to the jetski operators who spill gasoline on the beach or the mototaxi guys that dump oil into the sewer. My Thai friend who has a dog does not believe in picking up his dog poop. Perhaps he believes this is a task reserved for the Burmese.

As an aside, the dog poop rule is that the dog will pick a place where there are people so that they can point and go OMG look at the size of the turd. The bigger the audience, the bigger and sloppier the treasure.

you can walk your dog on Naiharn beach in the morning before around 830am. It is the unspoken rule. If your dog poops just cover it with sand, out of sight out of mindlaugh.gif

Ok, the Nai Harn dogowners unspoken rule. How about the bathing guests there?

A perfect example of normal, decent, unselfish, dog owning and walking. It is YOUR responsibility to take your dog where his <deleted> and ability to bite people isn't a problem.

If that means you going out of your way, and having to drive for 20 minutes, then so be it. As a dog owner you are the minority, the onus is upon you, to not let your dog upset anybody else.

For someone that's stirred a few emotions on TV, that's very well said BTB. Hear, hear!!

Fortunately, my dogs prefer to go off beach into some scrub area to relieve themselves, however on the rare occasion when there has been an 'incident', digging a hole about one foot deep and nudging the offending matter into it takes care of the problem. As somebody else remarked, sand and tide have a great filtering effect. In truth, whilst unpleasant, dog faeces is the least of the problems facing Phuket's beaches.

People whom let their dogs sh!te everywhere and just leave it are disgusting.

I don't disagree completely with what SP is saying, however as most of us know, responsible dog ownership in Phuket isn't common. What is common is people getting dogs, letting them do their own thing all day whilst their owners are out, and if they are lucky, maybe there will be some food in their bowl at night. These comments are directed as much towards some Expats, as well as Thais. That said, I know quite a few Thais who are meticulous in their care and treatment of their dogs.

Oh, and in my experience and awareness, I've found that responsible dog owners have a higher than average knowledge and adherence to personal hygiene standards.

I have 2 homes in Thailand, thus I take my dog walking both places.

In Phuket I am not allowed to throw poo in a plastic bag in the garbage bins, thus I have stopped picking it up

In Hua Hin I always pick up dogs poo and throw the plastic bag in garbage bin.

adapting to the culture
