Haruhiko Kuroda, president of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will be in Thailand on November 11 to deliver a speech on Asia’s economic cooperation and connectivity at the UN Conference Centre

Hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the event is a part of the ESCAP's Distinguished Person's Lecture Series which has featured talks delivered by Nobel Laureates Professor Joseph Stiglitz and Professor Amartya Sen, among others.

Kuroda has been leading the ADB since 2004 and was previously special advisor to the Japanese Cabinet and professor of economics. During a distinguished career with the Japanese Ministry of Finance, Kuroda

helped steer the Asian nations through the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and establish the Chiang Mai Initiative, a network of currency swap agreements.

His lecture will discuss how Asia has much to gain from enhanced regional economic cooperation, especially in the aftermath of the global economic crisis. Enhanced regional connectivity through transport, energy and telecommunications and also appropriate policies and institutions will be vital for Asia’s sustained growth and poverty reduction.
