PM: State of Emergency Could End by New Year's

The prime minister says the emergency decree could possibly be revoked before the New Year holidays, as the political situation has eased off recently.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said it is possible that the emergency rule will be lifted in the remaining six provinces, including Bangkok, by the end of this year, as the political tension appears to have eased recently.

The State of Emergency was originally due to expire in January.

In response to concerns that violence could break out between December and January, during which time a number of political rallies have been planned, the premier said the authorities have not seen any signs of possible disturbance.

Regarding two anti government red-shirt supporters who were granted bail by the Justice Ministry to take a stand in the court, the prime minister met with them to ask the freed red shirt members to remain on good behavior to comply with procedure so as to facilitate the consideration of bail applications for detained red shirt members who are still being held by authorities.

He added that the court is considering granting bail to two more red-shirt supporters soon.

The emergency decree should continue, untill we have a proper police force, to seriously handle the red shirts during their rallies!
